Alan Bailey is a 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Facilitator, Total Quality Transformation Trainer (TQT), conflict resolution facilitator, and consultant who has facilitated numerous process improvement teams for colleges, universities, businesses, and community organizations throughout the state.  This lecturer, researcher, storyteller, and aspiring author received his undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and advanced degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University.  During his 23-year career as a librarian, Alan has served as a public school media coordinator, branch manager of a public library and worked in community college and university libraries. 
Alan currently serves as Assistant Professor & Education Curriculum Librarian at Joyner Library, East Carolina University, is active in various national, state, and local organizations, and has appeared in theater productions and a major motion picture.

Stacy Baggett

Stacy Baggett is the Coordinator of Electronic and Continuing Resources Cataloging at Joyner Library. She has been cataloging serials and e-resources since 2002. Stacy has also worked in the Circulation, Systems, and Reference Departments in Joyner Library. She received her MLS from North Carolina Central University in 1998.

Joe Barricella

Joe Barricella is a Production Coordinator in the Digital Collections Department at Joyner Library. He is responsible for facilitating a smooth flow of communication and production information amongst the various staff members and student employees of the department. He has a diverse background in printing and the graphic arts. He worked for the North Carolina Maritime Museum as a Graphic Artist and gained experience in the two dimensional aspects of exhibit design. While working for the museum, he realized the importance of preserving North Carolina's rich cultural heritage for future generations. He also worked in the graphics department for Kaufmann’s, which is now Macy’s. His printing and copying experience started with Kinkos, where he worked as the Computer Services Supervisor. He spent time in the prepress department of a commercial printer preparing digital files for offset printing. 

Lisa Barricella

Lisa Barricella is the Interim Head of Acquisitions at Joyner Library, East Carolina University. She received her MLIS from the University of Pittsburgh in December 1999. She began her library career as a Fellow at North Carolina State University working in the Acquisitions Department and the Digital Library Initiatives Department. Upon completion of the Fellowship, she joined Joyner Library as the Acquisitions Librarian overseeing monographs purchasing.

Emily is a native of Harrisonburg, Va. and has spent the last 15 years working in all types and sizes of libraries in locations ranging from Florida to Texas to Ohio. In 2005, Emily moved in Greenville and is now an Instruction/Reference Librarian at Joyner Library. Emily has a B.A. in Business Administration from Bridgewater College of Virginia and a M.L.S. from Florida State University. Emily is a member of the online collaborative organization “Librarians of Second Life” and is a Librarian in the East Carolina University Second Life Library.

Larry Boyer has been the Director of Joyner Library since September 2006.  His experience includes more than 30 years as a librarian including work for the Library of Congress, the Administrative Office of the US Courts, and Appalachian State University’s Belk Library.  Interested in academic library space planning and student learning, he hopes to lead the Library in repurposing our wonderful building to better meet the needs of 21st century students and learners.  To relax he and his wife Sue enjoy Scottish Country Dancing.http://personal.ecu.edu/boyerl/index.html

Gloria Bradshaw

Gloria Bradshaw has worked as the Conservation Lab Manager of the Preservation and Conservation unit in Joyner Library at East Carolina University since 1993.  She co-chairs on the Joyner Library Disaster Committee.  Gloria oversees all conservation treatments in the unit and is responsible for ensuring all Environmental Health and Safety regulations are followed.  Her training and research include art courses at ECU such as drawing and design, Solinet workshops in Preservation and Disaster planning, Book and Paper repair, Deacidification treatments, Mold Recovery and Library binding for preservation.  In pursuit of her training and research, Gloria has traveled from North Carolina to Maryland attending workshops at such institutions as ECU, State, Chapel Hill, Etherington Conservation Center and Johns Hopkins.  She received the ECU Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Innovation in 1996.


Mark Custer

A lover of bound books first and foremost, Mark received his BA in English Literature from Indiana University--Bloomington.  In 2006, he earned his MLIS and a certificate in Digital Libraries from Syracuse University.  Prior to joining the Digital Collections department in Joyner Library, he worked as a Technical Services Librarian in the Granville County Public Library at Oxford, NC.  When not in a library, Mark enjoys swimming, video games, and eating Tibetan cuisine (when he can find it).


Maliha Farhadi

Originally from Kabul, Afghanistan, Maliha Farhadi came as a Fulbright graduate student to NC State University. After obtaining her MA in ESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) she taught English at different levels, primary school to university, for fifteen years. She eventually moved to Greenville and started working in Joyner Library, first in the Circulation Department and then Teaching Resources Department, while earning her Masters in Library Science. She is married to Dr. Abdul-Shakoor Farhadi and has two children.

Teaching foreign students and working with the public has given her a broad perspective and understanding of diversity of all types including race, age, religion, and cultural background.


Gretchen Gueguen

Gretchen Gueguen is Digital Initiatives Librarian at East Carolina University. She has worked as Digital Collections Librarian at the University of Maryland Libraries, as well as a project manager and assistant at the Maryland Institute for Technology in the Humanities. Gretchen holds an MLS from the University of Maryland where she won the College of Information Studies Dean's Award for outstanding student research project. Gretchen has presented at the Library Information and Technology Association (LITA) National Forum, the international Digital Humanities Conference, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference (MARAC). Gretchen has recently co-authored two publications, “Cross-collection searching: A Pandora’s Box or the Holy Grail?” in latest issue of Literary and Linguistic Computing, and an “Annotated Overview of Selected Electronic Resources” appearing in A Companion to Digital Literary Studies published by Blackwell Publishing in January of 2008.


Tracie Hampton

Tracie is a Conservation Technician with Joyner Library’s Preservation and Conservation unit and has training in book conservation and repair from the Etheringon Conservation Center and the North Carolina Preservation Consortium.  She also brings to Joyner her varied experiences from over a quarter century of working in academic, school and public libraries, and museums.  After earning a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies from California State University San Bernardino, she married a career United States Marine and spent the next 20 years moving about the country.  Upon his retirement from the Marines, Tracie and her husband decided to settle in beautiful eastern North Carolina.  An avid sailing enthusiast, she is active in the Ragged Point Yacht Club as the club’s historian.

Chris Hodges

Chris Hodges is a Technology Analyst working in Joyner Library’s I.T. department.  Chris obtained his bachelor’s degree in Information and Computer Technology from East Carolina University in 2006.  Chris began his career as a student employee working in Joyner Library’s Digital Learning Center.  From there he moved in the I.T. department as their student helper.  Chris was hired full-time in 2005 and has worked as a Technology Analyst since 2006.  When not at work, Chris enjoys video games, and bowling.

David Hursh

David Hursh is Associate Professor and Head Music Librarian at ECU.  Mr. Hursh has published several articles on music librarianship and is currently working on a book that will present the biography of 19th century North Carolina folk musician and patent medicine entrepreneur, Alice Person.  Mr. Hursh’s music degrees are in voice performance, and he appears regularly as tenor soloist throughout the eastern North Carolina region.

William Gee serves as Interlibrary Loan Librarian at Joyner Library, East Carolina University. He holds a Master of Science in Information Science from the University of Tennessee and a Bachelor of Arts in history and political science and a paralegal certificate from Berry College. Mr. Gee has worked previously in reference, circulation, serials, government documents, and technical services. Outside of libraries, he has worked in municipal government human resources and with children’s educational programming.

Cynthia earned her undergraduate degree in Psychology (North Carolina Wesleyan College), a Maters of Business Administration (Campbell University) and a doctorate in Higher Education Administration and Supervision (North Carolina State University). She has experience in training development and delivery, facilitation, organizational development, team building, and project management. She used several personality inventories in her various positions with Sprint as a part of her team building efforts and career counseling with employees.

Dr. Marson is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology (LSIT) at ECU.  She was appointed to the Advisory Board of LSSCP in 2006 as a representative from ALCTS (Association of Library Collection Development and Technical Services).  Dr. Marson has been involved in teaching support staff as an adjunct instructor for the Associate Degree program in Library Science at Central Carolina Community College.

Barbara Memory, PhD

Barbara Cobb Memory earned the Ph.D. and Bachelor’s Degrees in Music Education and Music Therapy at Michigan State University, and the M.M. in Music Therapy at Florida State University. She is a Board Certified Music Therapist, and obtained Orff-Schulwerk Certification for Levels I and II and Suzuki Training.
Dr. Memory has been the Director of Music Therapy at ECU since 1986, where she coordinates the undergraduate and graduate Music Therapy Program.  Dr. Memory is a member of the American Music Therapy Association, the Music Therapy Association of North Carolina, the Suzuki Association of the Americas, and Rotary International.
She has presented numerous workshops for music therapists, music educators, allied professional organizations, and community groups, and directs three community choirs for individuals with special needs.  She has recently done demonstration Music Therapy projects in settings for oncology, adolescent substance abuse, Alzheimer’s Disease, at-risk youth, and Assisted Living


Suzanne Metcalf

A native of Pawtucket, RI, Suzanne has been steeped in art, music and cooking all her life. Her early Crayon imitations of Hollywood costume designer Edith Head’s work eventually led to an encouraging letter from Cher’s and Carol Burnett’s costume designer, Bob Mackey. She attended North Carolina School of the Arts for costume design where she met her husband Tim Metcalf, a Hollywood stuntman and ECU’s Athletic Compliance Director. After running a home catering business, she opted for a desk job in the Henderson Library at Georgia Southern University. During the library’s 2004 Earth Day festivities, she fashioned book jackets into gift bags for a recycling display booth. In 2006 she returned to North Carolina when her husband accepted the ECU position and less than a year she joined the Joyner Library Interlibrary Loan Department as Document Delivery Coordinator. She continues creating the gift bags from Joyner’s discarded book jackets and donates most of the bags to charitable silent auctions.

Mark Sanders

Mark Sanders is the Head of Reference at East Carolina University’s Joyner Library.  Prior to that he was the Student Outreach Reference Librarian.  He holds a BA in Foreign Languages from UNC-Asheville, an MA from Penn State University and an MLS from UNC-Chapel Hill.

Ralph Scott

Ralph Scott began working in academic libraries in the fall of 1957 when he worked part time as a library page at the Graduate History Reading Room at Columbia University, In two months he was promoted to Night Desk Clerk a job he held for three years. Next he worked full time as the Senior Reserve Book Clerk until 1962 when he moved to the Special Collections Department at Columbia. In Special Collections he worked with the papers of: John Jay, Alexand Hamilton, Frank Arthur Vanderlip, "Wild Bill" Donovan, George Templeton Strong, Stephen and Hart Crane as well as several rare book collections. While working here he met most of the important historians of the period including John Hope Franklin. The first book he helped write as a student assistant was Alden T Vaughan's "New England Frontier - Puritans and Indians" (1964). His most recent book is "Wilmington Shipyard" (2007).
In 1970 Ralph came to East Carolina to work as a reference librarian. He worked in reference for fifteen years and then moved to Government Documents. Later he served in Systems and most recently as curator of Printed Books and Maps in Special Collections. After a brief period in 1970 as an SPA Librarian I, he has been: Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and now Professor in Academic Library Services. He is currently editor for the award winning journal "North Carolina Libraries."

In her 30 years of experience, Linda has served as a public school media coordinator in grades ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade, as a high school vocational coordinator teacher and as a director of library services in the community college system.  Currently, Linda serves as assistant professor and Head of Services in the Teaching Resources Center (TRC) at J. Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University.  She received her undergraduate degree in library science and computer science from East Carolina University and master’s degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University.

Hazel Walker received her undergraduate degree from East Carolina University and master’s degrees from East Carolina University and North Carolina Central University.  Hazel currently serves as assistant professor and Outreach Coordinator in the Teaching Resources Center (TRC) at J. Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University.  Her previous experience spans from being a special collections librarian in a chemical research company to a reference librarian in the community college.

Karen Warren has worked for ECU in the Division of Academic and Student Affairs for 7 years.  She holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nutrition from ECU. Prior to working at ECU she was owner of Wellness Consulting Services Inc. and provided wellness programming to various businesses and hospitals including PCMH. Karen started her career at PCHM as a clinical nutritionist and then worked with Brody School of Medicine for 8 years in the Department of OB/GYN. She began specializing in wellness programming in the mid-80’s when she worked for Burroughs Wellcome Co. Her passion is taking on the challenge of helping people make behavior changes that will improve their lives and their community.

Dr. Larry Nash White

Dr. White is an Assistant Professor, Co-Principle Director of the Community Oriented Librarian Recruitment Scholarship (COLRS), and MLS Program Director at East Carolina University's Department of Library Science and Instructional Technology. Prior to coming to ECU, Dr. White worked in senior administrator roles in retail management and in public and academic libraries. He is an internationally invited speaker and presenter on library performance, leadership, assessment, and competition for service and provides consulting services to libraries and non-profit organizations globally. He has published in the area of performance assessment, competitive response, intellectual capital assessment, and financial management of libraries. Dr. White was named a 2007 "Mover and Shaker" by Library Journal, for his work as an innovator and leader in the library profession.

Dr. White enjoys music, travel and genealogy and lives in Greenville with his wife and three dogs (fur kids).

Beth Winstead

Beth Winstead is currently the Innovation and Technology Officer at Joyner Library.  She has more than 25 years experience working in libraries in the areas of Acquisitions, Serials, Interlibrary Loan, Circulation, Public Services and Systems.  Beth holds a BSBA from ECU, an MLS from NCCU and an MPA from ECU.  She has found the best way to insure regular visits from her college children is owning a Wii.
