Active Learning
  • Material Types
    • What Kind of Information Is It? In groups of 3-4, students will review a list of materials, identify what kind of information it is, and put it in the appropriate place in the grid. Each group will report their findings to the class.
  • Subject Headings
    • Using Keywords to Identify Subject Headings Working in groups of 2, each group will be assigned a search term. They will search the library catalog for their topic by using the keyword or "word search" function and answer three questions related to subject headings.
    • Hands-On Searching – Introduction to Subject Headings Ask students to figure out what a book is about and search for it in the catalog using their keywords. They will probably be unsuccessful searching by keyword. Next, students will search by the title or author in order to locate the catalog record. They will review the subject headings.

  • Muddiest Point
    • Distribute blank note cards to the class.
    • Ask students to write down one topic that is most unclear to them after the library instruction session.
    • Review one or two topics that are most confusing to the class.
