The W. Keats Sparrow English 1200 award recognizes excellence in research and writing by students in East Carolina University's English 1200 composition classes.  The award is sponsored by the Friends of Joyner Library and is named in honor of Dr. W. Keats Sparrow, Professor Emeritus of English and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.  The following guidelines apply for the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters:

  • Papers written for an ECU English 1200 class during the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters are eligible for consideration.  They may be submitted by the instructor (with the student's permission) or by the student. A print copy of the paper must be submitted, accompanied by an electronic copy (email attachment sent to willisc@ecu.edu, disk or CD).
  • Papers must include a research component, using Joyner Library's resources. Papers will be judged on the quality of the research, as well as the quality of the writing.
  • A cover sheet must accompany the paper, containing:
    • Student's name
    • Local and permanent addresses
    • Local and permanent telephone numbers
    • Email address
    • Instructor's name and ENGL 1200 section number
    • Statement giving permission to post the paper on the Joyner Library website
    • The cover sheet is the ONLY sheet on which the student's name should appear.

Deadline:  Entries must be submitted to Dr. Wendy Sharer, Director of First-Year Composition, Department of English, 2141 Bate Building, OR Carolyn Willis, Coordinator of Instructional Services, Room 1007, Joyner Library, by NOON, Thursday, May 8, 2008.
  • Papers will be judged by a panel of judges comprised of faculty from the ECU English Department and Joyner Library.  Papers will NOT be returned after the judging has been completed.  Students are encouraged to keep a copy of their work.
  • First, second and third place winners will be selected.  Winners will be notified by July 7, 2008, and will receive certificates and cash prizes ($100 for first, $75 for second, and $50 for third place).  Prizes will be awarded at a reception in Joyner Library, to be held in August 2008.
  • Entries not conforming to these rules may be disqualified.
