Known for its leadership in distance learning and its mission to serve, J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University (ECU) seeks an energetic, visionary librarian to lead Research and Instructional Services in providing outstanding service to ECU students and faculty members, and citizens of Eastern North Carolina.
Responsibilities: Reporting to the Assistant Director for Public Services, the Head of Research and Instructional Services will work with faculty and staff within the department and the library to plan, develop, and deliver a full range of traditional and innovative products and services. The successful candidate will coordinate the operations of a heavily used reference service point, supervise 7 FTE librarians and 4 FTE staff members, lead the department in providing effective instruction, support distance education, and facilitate the use of emerging technologies to expand services. The individual will undertake regular and instructional reference duties. As a member of the library’s management team, the Head of Research and Instructional Services helps guide the organization in its mission.
Finalists will be asked to make a brief presentation during the on-campus interview.
Required Qualifications: Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution or international equivalent; three or more years of recent, progressively responsible reference and instructional expertise; experience in an academic library of comparable size; expertise with traditional and electronic reference materials; outstanding leadership and communication skills; flexibility in adapting to change; a strong commitment to public service, an understanding of the importance of government information to the provision of quality reference service; supervisory experience; familiarity with current trends in scholarly communication; ability to set priorities, and to develop, plan, and implement programs in an expanding electronic environment. The successful candidate should have the ability to achieve tenure through effective job performance, scholarly publication, and service activities.
Preferred Qualifications: An additional graduate degree; knowledge of current trends in information management and the use of technology, and experience with delivering research and instructional services in a distance education environment.
Academic Library Services: Academic Library Services (ALS) supports the campus community’s mission of teaching, research, and service. It holds membership in the Association of Southeastern Research Libraries (ASERL) and is a selective federal depository library. ALS is supported by an operating budget of $7.5 million, a materials budget of $4.4 million, and a staff of 105, including 40 faculty members. The Library's virtual infrastructure consists of a combination of vendor-based, open source, and locally developed resources using a variety of applications, primarily in a Windows environment. The Special Collections Division includes the Manuscripts and Rare Books Department, the University Archives, and the Verona Joyner Langford North Carolina Collection. The division’s East Carolina Manuscript Collection includes more than 5,500 cubic feet of documents, photographs, and maps in 1,800 collections. The University Archives contains approximately 7,000 feet of permanent holdings. The North Carolina Collection features books, maps, microforms, periodicals, and other materials pertaining to the state and its people. The J. Edgar Hoover Collection on International Communism, the Rare Book Collection, and the James H. and Virginia Schlobin Literature of the Fantastic Collection provide additional resources for research by students, faculty members, and visiting scholars. The library’s Digital Collections repository includes some 100,000 images drawn largely from the holdings of the Special Collections Division. Rank, Salary and Benefits: This is a twelve-month tenure track faculty position. Minimum salary of $57,000, with a comprehensive fringe benefits package. Professional achievement, service, and research/creative activity are required for tenure and promotion. Rank and salary will be commensurate with candidate’s experience and professional achievement.
