The J. Edgar Hoover Collection on International Communism reflects the history of communism worldwide. A gift to the university in 1968 by Dr. J.C. Peele of Kinston, North Carolina, the collection contains monographs, serials, pamphlets, leaflets and ephemeral materials. It includes titles pertaining to pro-communist and anti-communist organizations. The addition of a wealth of radical literature has broadened and strengthened the holdings. Presently, the collection contains more than 5,000 titles, some of which are not available elsewhere. Non-manuscript, published Hoover Collection items are listed in Joyner Library's catalog.
A finding aid for the J.C. Peele Papers can be found in the East Carolina Manuscript Collection Guides.
