How to Use the Scanners in the DLC

There are six computer stations in the Digital Learning Center that are equipped with scanners for your use. Five of these are reserved for student and faculty use, but one is open for community use with a Community Access card. Below are step-by-step instructions for using Library scanners.

  1. Lift the scanner lid and place your document on the glass, face down.
  2. On the computer, double-click the EPSON Scan icon located on the Desktop.
  3. In the top right of the scanning program window, there is a box labeled Mode. By default, that box says "Full Auto Mode." Click on the box and select Home Mode from the list.
  4. Set your scanning preferences. Pick from Color, Grayscale, or Black & White color options. Next, select the intended use for the scanned image by selecting either Screen/Web or Printer. If the image you are scanning is printed in a magazine or book, checkmark the box labeled Descreening Filter.
  5. Click on the Preview button to have the scanner generate a preview of what is on the scanner bed.
  6. A window with your preview will appear. Use the mouse to draw a box around the area you wish to have scanned.
  7. Click the Scan button in the EPSON Scan window.
  8. Specify where you want the scanned picture to be placed on the computer. If you are unsure of where to place it, the Desktop is a good choice.

A note about scanning and file sizes: If you are planning on printing out your scanned picture, scan it in Printer mode (150dpi or 300dpi). If you are planning on using the picture in a PowerPoint presentation, on a webpage, or sending it through e-mail, scan it in Screen/Web mode (72dpi or 96dpi). Also, save pictures in JPEG (.jpg) format instead of bitmap (.bmp) format to dramatically reduce file size. This will allow you to save more pictures on a disk and send them through e-mail more quickly.
