As Collection Development Librarians, we are charged to:
  • Provide outreach to faculty and graduate students
  • Promote the university's scholarly communication initiatives
  • Select print and electronic books
  • Review and adjust approval plan profiles for my subject areas
  • Assess the collection supporting my subjects
  • Make preservation, gift, and de-selection decisions
  • Recommend materials suitable for digitization
  • Recommend journal subscriptions and cancellations, online journal backfiles, microform materials, databases, datasets, and other resources
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues throughout Academic Library Services and the Laupus Health Sciences Library to build strong collections

As Head of Collection Development, Joseph Thomas is charged to:

  • Advance campus efforts relating to scholarly communication and the development of an institutional repository
  • Provide leadership for the development and management of the library's collections in all formats
  • Manage and strengthen the library's collaborative collection development program with academic departments and schools
  • Coordinate the library's subject liaisons' program
  • Direct collection assessment to inform data-driven materials budgeting and planning
  • Represent the library in statewide and regional buying consortia
