Teaching Resources Center Collections

Materials in the TRC are recognized by the first line of the call number. The first line of the call number is "Curric."

Biographies: Biographies in the TRC's collection are used by elementary, middle and high school age students.  Call numbers for books in this collection begin with "B."  

Big Books: The TRC offers a wide selection of Big Books.  A Big Book is an enlarged version of a beginning reading book, usually with very large print. Big Books are educational tools often used to instruct groups of emergent readers.

Children's Award Book Collection Plan: In 2004, the Teaching Resources Center began automatically acquiring various Children's Award Books each year.

Easy Fiction/Picture Books: Easy Fiction Books are illustrated stories that are written for preschool to grade 2 children.  Many books in the Easy collection can be used by older readers as well.  The TRC's picture book collection includes copies of Caldecott Medal award winners and honor books.  The call numbers for this collection begin with the letter "E." 

Kraus Curriculum Development Library: The Kraus Curriculum Development Library (KCDL) is a microfiche and/or online collection of current curriculum information in a variety of subjects covered in PreK-12 and Adult Basic Education. The TRC has KCDL on microfiche from 1978 -2003. Starting with 2003, the new Kraus curriculum materials are available online at kcdlonline.

Mixed Media Collection: The TRC’s Mixed Media collection contains read-a-longs, CDs, MP3s, audio cassettes, flashcards, and other media used by K-12 students and educators.

Nonfiction Books: The Nonfiction collection contains both professional materials for educators, such as activity books, and books for birth to grade 12 readers. Titles in the TRC's nonfiction collection correspond to the content areas of the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, as well as informational topics of interest to school-aged children.  Additionally, the TRC's collection of folktales and poetry are located within this collection.  Call numbers in the Nonfiction collection begin with numerals.

Professional Collection: The Professional Collection contains teaching materials and other valuable resources for K-12 educators. The collection includes books pertaining to classroom activities, lesson planning, bulletin boards, and instructional methods.

Reference Books: The noncirculating reference collection contains reference materials for elementary, middle and high school age student as well as professional reference materials for educators.  Call numbers in this collection begin with "Ref." 

Review Center: The TRC serves as a review center for publishers of children’s materials and invites educators, including pre-service teachers, to review and evaluate the titles within the collection. With more than 300 titles representing Stone Arch Books, Picture Window Books, Capstone Press, Compass Point Books Sylvan Dell Publishing and Morgan Reynolds Publishing  books within this collection circulate for 14-days.

Ronnie Barnes African-American Resource Collection: The Ronnie Barnes collection contains children's books written by and/or about African-Americans.  The collection contains many award winning books, including  Coretta Scott King award winners and honor titles.  Additionally, scholarly books will be highlighted in the collection on an annual rotating basis. At the end of each year, the scholarly materials will rotate out of the collection into the Joyner general stacks collection.  Visit our Ronnie Barnes page for additional information.  

Special Collection Books:  Curriculum books that are out of print or of value are in the Special Books Collection.  Several books in the collection have been signed by the author or illustrator.  Special Collections books do not circulate.     

Textbooks: The TRC collection contains both North Carolina State Adopted K-12 Textbooks and supplementary K-12 textbooks.

  • NC State Adopted K-12 Textbooks: The state of North Carolina adopts textbooks each year in a different subject area.  Adopted textbooks are used for five years by the state. The TRC’s current collection of state adopted materials includes such items as textbooks, textbook correlations, workbooks, manipulatives, student readers, assessment tools and audiovisual materials.   • Supplementary K-12 Textbooks: The supplementary textbook collection includes current textbooks that were not adopted for use by the state of North Carolina. The collection also houses previously adopted textbook materials. All materials in this collection are deselected after 10 years. 

Young Adult Fiction:The Fiction collection consists mainly of chapter books that are appropriate for students in grades 3-12. The TRC's fiction collection represents a variety of classic and contemporary literature and includes copies of Newbery Medalaward winners and honor books.  The call numbers in the fiction collection begin with "F".
