Campus Recreation and Wellness


The Wellness Passport program is a required assignment for all students enrolled in HLTH 1000 and some sections of COAD 1000. This program provides students with an added opportunity to experience a variety of health and wellness activities, services, and programs at ECU relative to the 8 Dimensions of Wellness. Any ECU department or registered student organization may submit a passport event application but approval is not guaranteed. The primary goal and needs of the Passport program will determine which proposals are accepted.  There are two categories of passport programs:

  • Regular – Programs and events that are smaller in nature. Examples include classroom lectures/discussions, exhibits, tabling events and small film screenings.
  • Premier – Larger-scale programs that feature a guest speaker, panel discussions, multi-departmental collaborative events, etc. These events usually draw large crowds and are typically held in Hendrix Theater or Wright Auditorium.

In order to be considered for Wellness Passport approval, programs must:
  • Address at least one of the dimensions of wellness (see below for descriptions of each);
  • Be educational in nature;
  • Be free for students;
  • Be submitted at least 2 weeks prior to the program event/date; AND
  • Include an assessment plan (for premier programs/events only).

Emotional - Awareness and acceptance of feelings and emotion.  Examples include relationships with friends and family, optimism, trust, self-esteem, self-acceptance, self-control and coping with stress.  

Environmental - Recognition of interdependence with nature.  Examples included recycling, sun (UV) exposure, pollution, air quality, lead paint exposure and second-hand tobacco smoking.  

Financial - Ability to manage one's financial resources. Examples include budget management, purposeful spending, and saving.

Intellectual - Openness to new concepts and ideas. Examples include critical thinking, being curious, questioning concepts, and solving problems.

Physical - Maintenance of a healthy body. Examples include maintaining proper nutrition, engaging in adequate physical exercise, and avoidance of harmful habits such as alcohol abuse, drug use, tobacco use, and practicing unsafe sex.

Social - Ability to perform social roles effectively, comfortably, and without harming others. Examples include establishing and maintaining personal friendships, learning good communication skills, having loving or intimate relationships, establishing a support network, and participating in the enrichment of one’s community, country, and world.

Spiritual - Meaning and purpose of human existence. Examples include becoming involved in a religious affiliation, experiencing peace with nature, meditating, and developing skills in yoga or the martial arts.

Occupational - Ability to enjoy a chosen career and/or contribute to society through volunteer activities. Examples include volunteering, workplace safety, and choosing a satisfying career/profession.

It is your responsibility to check the calendar regularly to see programs recently added, canceled, and to note any changes in programs. It is strongly advised that you arrive early for programs, as space fills up quickly and students will be admitted on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Wellness at 328-5171 or if you have any concerns.

  • You must take your HLTH or COAD 1000 book or Wellness Passport verification page to events. There will be someone at events to stamp your books at the end of the program as you are leaving. Please note that if you do not have a book, there is no guarantee that you will earn credit for attending that program. Make sure you have the title of the program filled in prior to receiving your stamp.
  • When you select an event, block out enough time in your schedule to arrive on time, be an active listener or participate when required, and allow for the possibility of the event running over time. You are required to attend the entire event unless otherwise noted in order to get your book stamped.
  • Books will only be stamped after the program or activity has been completed. You must have the title of the program completed before receiving a stamp. After attending an event, please complete the brief questions on the passport page. it is suggested that you complete these responses shortly after the event while it is still fresh in your mind. Please be honest when completing these questions, as this information will be used to offer bigger and better programs in the future. 
  • Some workshops are designed to be interactive; therefore, you will be expected to participate.
