Special Events are team, individual, and co-recreational in theme, providing all faculty, staff, and students with an opportunity for participation. Events planned for 2010-2011 include a variety of events that have been long established campus traditions. Join us early in the semester for the SRC Showcase which will provide an opportunity to sample many of the program areas at Campus Recreation and Wellness. Whether you enjoy climbing the wall, engaging in low-key sports competition, observing a club sports demonstration, taking part in a large group fitness class, or learning more about nutrition and fitness the Showcase should have something for you.

During CRW Family Weekend, the department opens the doors of the Student Recreation Center to parents and family members participating in the university’s Family Weekend programs. This includes access to the Student Recreation Center during the weekend as well as some specialized programming such as the Family Weekend Canoe/Kayak trips. King and Queen of the Halls renews the annual battle for supremacy of the residence halls for the 23rd year. Residence Hall students do battle in a number of carnival-type games in order to accrue credits and vie for a chance to compete in the tug-of-war. For individuals with or without disabilities, Adapted Sports Day is a unique program which facilitates activity sessions focusing on sports activities for people with disabilities. Now entering the 14th year, Adapted Sports Day is recognized throughout Eastern North Carolina.

Flatlanders-Fling-2010-136

The start of the Spring means that the Polar Bear Plunge, now entering its 15th year, cannot be far behind. This extremely popular event has blossomed from 35 in the first year in 1997 to a record-breaking 702 in 2010. Polar Bear jumpers brave the bitter temperatures and leap into the icy waters of the outdoor pool in the heart of January with the lure of a t-shirt and a chance for the grand prize drawing. The Spring semester also includes the Flatlander’s Fling Climbing Competition and the Bench Press Competition. Check our web site to view the event calendar and more details about each specific activity.
