Class Attendance Regulations

The department of athletics requires student-athletes to attend punctually every class session of each course for which the student-athlete is registered. Class attendance is monitored during the semester through academic progress reports from faculty and through classroom checks by the coaching staff. In addition, student-athletes are required to complete a class attendance verification form each week and submit that form to the designated coach for their sport.

Excused Absences

Student-athletes are allowed university excused absences according to the guidelines outlined in the University Catalog under “Academic Regulations: Class Attendance and Participation Regulations.”  Absences due to athletic competition are excused and an official university excused absence form is issued from the Student Development Office following the missed class.

Unexcused Absences

Unexcused absences are not permitted. Penalties for unexcused absences are as follows:

The first unexcused absence will result in the student-athlete missing the next scheduled team practice and thus being subject to individual team policies for a missed practice.

The second and third unexcused absences will result in the student-athlete missing the next scheduled away competition that would result in missed class time. If no more such competitions are scheduled, then the student-athlete will miss the next scheduled competition. If no more competitions are scheduled for the current semester, the penalty will carry over to the next semester in which competition takes place.

The fourth unexcused absence will result in the student-athlete being suspended from competition for the semester. The student-athlete will also forfeit his or her athletics scholarship for the next two academic semesters.

Re-instatement of the student-athlete’s athletics scholarship will require two full semesters in walk-on status, no further unexcused absences, recommendation of the head coach, and approval by the director of athletics.
