"Athletes for Education" Speaker's Bureau

The "Athletes for Education" Speaker's Bureau was developed by the Office of Student Development to "team up" with area educators to meet the challenges of education in the local school systems. As members of the speaker's bureau, student-athletes visit area elementary and junior high schools to talk about the importance of education. Athletes are often looked upon as local heroes and can provide excellent peer leadership and role modeling. The primary goal of the speaker's bureau is to encourage and support area youth in their educational pursuits and to challenge them to set goals, to have positive attitudes, and to display winning behaviors in the classroom.

Any student-athlete interested in being a member of the speaker's bureau should possess the following characteristics important to being a good role model: leadership ability, dependability, good communication skills, and good academic standing. Training sessions for new members are held at the beginning of the regular academic semesters. Those interested in becoming a member should contact the speaker's bureau coordinator.
