Student-Athletes in Service to the Community
We are proud of the level of commitment shown by our student-athletes here at East Carolina University. Student-athletes and coaches at ECU are dedicated to giving back to the community that so generously supports them. Our student-athletes give of their time, their most valuable commodity, demonstrating that they take an active part in the community and are dedicated to serving others off the field through their volunteer service.
Individual student-athletes and entire teams have the opportunity to participate in many activities such as building homes for Habitat for Humanity, walk-a-thons, sport related clinics, visiting children’s hospitals, caring for animals at the Humane Society and reading to and tutoring children in local elementary schools. In the 2003 – 2004 academic school year, 320 student-athletes from 18 different teams volunteered 2,777 hours back to Greenville and surrounding community. Currently during the 2004 – 2005 academic school years, our student-athletes have surpassed last year’s numbers and have volunteered 2,850 hours.
Annually, the student-athletes are recognized for their service, hard work and dedication. Individuals volunteering twenty hours or more receive community service awards. The individual who volunteers the most hours is also given an award. Finally, the Athletic Director’s Community Service Cup is awarded to the team with the most hours of community service per team member.
Any team or student-athlete interested in participating in a community service/volunteering event is encouraged to plan ahead. Each team or individual must sign a NCAA Promotional Activities Form for each event and complete an insurance form in order to receive full credit. By volunteering, student-athletes are able to enhance their leadership, communication, organization and people skills. Teams or individuals that are interested should contact the Office of Student Development for further information.
