A Real Integrated Sports Experience (ARISE)

The “A Real Integrated Sports Experience” (ARISE) program is designed to provide students, faculty/staff, alumni, and community members with and without disabilities the opportunity for involvement in a variety of unique sports, fitness and recreational activities as a means to enhance their physical, intellectual, social, and emotional well-being. The program features modified sport and recreational activities and instruction in an integrated setting for anyone who wishes to gain experience in adapted recreational activities. Although these programs are designed specifically for individuals with disabilities, everyone is encouraged and welcome to attend. A more detailed listing of available activities follows.

Climbing Wall
The Student Recreation Center’s 27-foot indoor climbing wall is open from 3:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Fridays from 3:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. Adventure program staff are trained in facilitating adapted climbing and adapted equipment is available.

PAIRS (Partners Assisting in Recreational Services)
PAIRS matches an interested person with an experienced partner who facilitates his/her involvement in a chosen recreational or exercise activity. By working with a partner, a participant can learn to use fitness equipment, play a sport or have individualized assistance for a regular workout schedule or fitness class. Common PAIRS activities include swimming, running/walking/pushing, weight training, and sports. However, other types of activities may also be accommodated.

Wheelchair Basketball Drop-in Games
Individuals with or without a disability are welcome and encouraged to participate in this exciting sport! This modified innovative approach to basketball provides a different perspective on the game along with a great workout for the upper body. Drop-in game dates will be determined at the beginning of the Fall semester.

Wheelchair Rugby
This sport combines elements of basketball, football and hockey. Similar to the able-bodied version of rugby, teams of four participants attempt to score a goal by crossing a designated line with a volleyball. The game can be played recreationally by individuals both with and without disabilities. Individual players may register on-site prior to each night of play. Drop-in game dates will be determined at the beginning of the Fall semester.
Volunteers
Volunteers are a critical work force within the adapted recreation program. Volunteers are encouraged to attend and participate in many of the activities offered, assisting with wheelchair basketball, wheelchair rugby, intramural sports activities, hand crank bicycle, and special events. In addition, volunteers may also serve as exercise partners through the PAIRS program. If you are interested in volunteering with the Adapted Recreation program, contact David Gaskins at 328-6387 or email  gaskinsd@ecu.edu.
