Fitness Staff

Administrative Staff

Sam Combs MM, CSCS, RTS2
Sam is the Assistant Director of Fitness for CRW. Sam acts as a certification examiner for AFAA/Step Reebok and is a recognized continuing education provider for AFAA, ACE and Blast Continuing Education Systems.  He is a resist-a-ball C.O.R.E. trainer and holds certifications from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, Les Mills USA, Keiser, NSCA, Step Reebok, and Spectrum of Success/True Colors.

Suzanne McDonald, MA, ACSM HFI
Suzanne is the Assistant Director of Physical Activity and Wellness Education and began working for CRW in August 2003. She has a strong interest in behavior modification and enjoys helping people find ways to fit physical activity into their daily life in order to live a healthier lifestyle. Suzanne holds the ACSM Health Fitness Instructor certification and has a Masters degree in Exercise and Sport Science. When not working, Suzanne enjoys reading, traveling, strength training, playing soccer, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.



Personal Trainers

Narris Bethea, BS, CPT

Narris is a second degree student here at ECU. He holds a B.S. in Health and Fitness and is currently pursuing a nutrition degree. Narris is AFAA certified and has been training for four years. His hobbies include working out and various other sports. Narris loves to help people make positive changes in their lives and he has a passion for exercise and experience to help you get started on the right path. Narris incorporates behavior and lifestyle modifications into his training. He was also an elite high school athlete so he is well equipped to provide sport specific training.

 

Lindsey Craft, CPT

Lindsey Craft is a senior double majoring in Health Fitness Specialist and Psychology. She began competitive swimming when she was 5 and raced on a national level when she was 12. Lindsey practiced gymnastics recreationally and has also played soccer for 9 years and made states. She is an NSCA Certified Personal Trainer and passed her Science and Fundamentals Section of her Strength and Conditioning Specialist Exam. Her favorite things are her older brother, her skateboard, and dancing. She enjoys lifting weights; working with kids and athletes, trying new exercise techniques, and seeing her clients reach their maximum potential.

 

Chip Davis, CPT

Chip is an ACE Certified Personal Trainer and an ECU Senior majoring in Health Fitness Specialist. Chip began working in the CRW weight room in August 2006 and as a Personal Trainer in January  2007.  Chip’s hobbies include resistance training, golfing and playing the guitar. Weight training, resistance training using the stability ball and tubing are his areas of expertise. When asked what he likes best about personal training his response was, “Helping individuals change their life to living a healthier lifestyle.”

 

Rachel Day, BS, CPT

Rachel Day is a graduate student in Exercise and Sport Science. Her Bachelor’s is in Exercise Science from Liberty University in Virginia. Rachel is a certified personal trainer through FITour and specializes in strength training, circuit training and working with older adults. Her hobbies include working out, reading, scrapbooking and playing sports. She enjoys personal training because she likes helping people become more active, create a positive change in their lifestyle as well as teach people to love exercise.

 

Leigh Ennis

Leigh is a junior at ECU who is majoring in Health Fitness Specialist. She plans to become certified in either ACE or ACSM. She has worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness since January 2008. She loves to motivate people to achieve their fitness goals and make healthy lifestyle changes. Her expertise is in Strength training.

 

Jay Hardin

Jay is a senior majoring in Health Fitness Specialist; His hobbies include weightlifting, basketball, long boarding and tae kwon do. Jay enjoys the one on one atmosphere of training clients and helping them reach their goals. Jay specializes in upper body workouts.

 

Scott Helfrich

Scott is a junior majoring in Biology; after completion, he hopes to get his masters degree at East Carolina University. Scott plans of pursuing an ACE or ACSM certification soon and his hobbies include wakeboarding, snowboarding, soccer and hockey. His specialties in personal training include strength training as well as increasing cardiovascular endurance. One thing Scott finds very rewarding is helping people achieve their fitness goals. He is a self proclaimed, “Good Guy.”

 

Logan Johnson     

Logan is a senior at ECU who is majoring in Exercise Physiology and he plans on getting AFAA certified in the future. His expertise in PT is strength training and his main goal is to help people feel better about themselves. Logan enjoys staying active, surfing, and playing guitar. He has worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness since June of 2008.

 

Darnell Jones

Darnell is a senior Health Fitness Specialist major at East Caroline University and has worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness since July 2008. He enjoys basketball, football, weightlifting and music. The thing Darnell enjoys most about personal training is the one on one time with clients and trying to help them progress. Darnell’s specialty is strength training.

 

Michael Newman

Michael is a senior who is completing his internship at Campus Recreation and Wellness. His major is Health Fitness Specialist. Michael has worked at CRW for four years in the customer service area and recently began working in the fitness area, as a personal trainer and in group fitness. He has a passion for helping people reach their goals and says his specialties would be weight loss and sport specific workouts. He was also a collegiate athlete and letter winner at ECU.

 

Jimmy O’Brien

Jimmy is a sophomore Business and Marketing major at ECU. He plans on becoming certified in either ACE or FITour and his hobbies include cooking, beat-boxing and working out. Jimmy wants to help people see physical progression and overcome challenges on their way to a healthier life. His specialties in personal training are cardio and lower body workouts.

 

Beth White, BS

Beth is a graduate student at ECU and holds a degree in Exercise Physiology and plans on pursuing an ACSM certification.  Beth has worked for Campus Recreation and Wellness for two years and her hobbies are volleyball, softball, football, racquetball and running. Beth enjoys the challenge of helping achieve their goals.  Her specialties for personal training are strength training and running; she loves to joke and has a great sense of humor.
