Administrative Staff

Sam Combs MM, CSCS, RTS2
Sam is the Assistant Director of Fitness for CRW. Sam acts as a certification examiner for AFAA/Step Reebok and is a recognized continuing education provider for AFAA, ACE and Blast Continuing Education Systems.  He is a resist-a-ball C.O.R.E. trainer and holds certifications from ACSM, ACE, AFAA, Les Mills USA, Keiser, NSCA, Step Reebok, and Spectrum of Success/True Colors.

Suzanne McDonald, MA, ACSM HFI
Suzanne is the Assistant Director of Physical Activity and Wellness Education and began working for CRW in August 2003. She has a strong interest in behavior modification and enjoys helping people find ways to fit physical activity into their daily life in order to live a healthier lifestyle. Suzanne holds the ACSM Health Fitness Instructor certification and has a Masters degree in Exercise and Sport Science. When not working, Suzanne enjoys reading, traveling, strength training, playing soccer, being outdoors, and spending time with her family.



Personal Trainers


Christina Amato, BS

Christina joins the Wellness Staff as a GA for physical activity; she is currently pursuing her MS in Exercise Physiology at ECU.  In May of 2009, Christina graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University with a BS in Sport Management with a concentration on Health/Fitness Studies.  Christina has experience in the several areas in the health/fitness field including; personal training, teaching, stress management and sport performance.  She enjoys the health and fitness field because it provides countless opportunities to interact with new people and educate them on how to improve their health and wellness through physical activity.

 

Narris Bethea, BS, CPT

Narris is working on a second degree at ECU. He holds a B.S. in Health and Fitness and is currently pursuing a nutrition degree. Narris is AFAA certified and has been training for five years. His hobbies include working out and various other sports. Narris loves to help people make positive changes in their lives and he has a passion for exercise and experience to help you get started on the right path. Narris incorporates behavior and lifestyle modifications into his training. He was also an elite high school athlete so he is well equipped to provide sport specific training.

 

Ted Brennis

Ted is a senior majoring in History and has being working with the Student Recreation Center for the last six months.  As a cadet in the Army ROTC, Ted has gained knowledge and practical experience in physical conditioning and training.  His specialty areas include; running, weight training, calisthenics, and Crossfit training.  Ted enjoys personal training because it provides him with opportunities to meet and interact with other people who are interested in making improvements in their overall health.

 

Paul Cherry

Paul is a senior majoring in economics and mathematics and has been working with the Student Recreation Center since May of 2009.  His hobbies include exercising, playing golf, and actively participating in intramural sports.  As a personal trainer, Paul finds ways to design training programs that will specifically meet the client’s health goals.  He specializes in weight training and core development.

 

Leigh Ennis

Leigh is a senior who is majoring in Health Fitness Specialist. She plans to become certified in either AFAA or ACSM. She has worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness since January 2008. She loves to motivate people to achieve their fitness goals and make healthy lifestyle changes. Leigh’s training philosophy is centered on helping clients to set and attain their goals.  She will take the time to help her clients create realistic and attainable goals and their help you reach them through a personalized training program.  Her expertise is in strength training and flexibility training.

 

Scott Helfrich, CPT

Scott is a senior majoring in Biology; after completion, he hopes to get his masters degree at East Carolina University.  Scott has been with Student Recreation for one year and is AFAA certified.  His hobbies include wakeboarding, snowboarding, soccer and tennis. His specialties in personal training include strength training, core training, as well as, increasing cardiovascular endurance. One thing Scott finds very rewarding is helping people achieve their fitness goals. He is a self proclaimed, “Good Guy.”

 

Darnell Jones

Darnell is a senior Health Fitness Specialist major at East Carolina University and has worked at Campus Recreation and Wellness since July 2008. He enjoys basketball, football, weightlifting and music. The thing Darnell enjoys most about personal training is the one on one time with clients and trying to help them progress. Darnell’s specialty is strength training.

Olivia Ratcliff, CPT

Olivia is a junior in the Exercise Physiology program here at ECU, and has been working with Student Recreation for the last six months.  She is certified by the ACSM and her hobbies include running and biking.  She enjoys personal training because it provides her with the opportunity to help others reach their fitness goals.

Beth White, BS

Beth is a graduate student at ECU and holds a degree in Exercise Physiology and plans on pursuing an ACSM certification.  Beth has worked for Campus Recreation and Wellness for two years and her hobbies are volleyball, softball, football, racquetball and running. Beth enjoys the challenge of helping achieve their goals.  Her specialties for personal training are strength training and running; she loves to joke and has a great sense of humor.
