Frequently Asked Questions
What are Intramural Sports?
The intramural sports program offers a fun and unique recreational opportunity to East Carolina University students, faculty and staff. The intramural sports program provides leagues, tournaments and events in a wide variety of sports and activities. With a range of competitive levels, everyone is able to find activities that fit their ability level. Beyond play, the intramural sports program provides opportunities for students to gain employment on campus. ECU boasts one of the finest sports officials development systems among university intramural sports programs in the nation.
How do I get involved? Intramural teams are created through common bonds or associations within the East Carolina University community such as friends, residence halls and campus organizations or groups. The intramural sports office also keeps a list of free agents for each sport and will assist in getting these players on a team.
The intramural sports program also employs students to officiate and supervise all games in each activity. Clinics and workshops are used to teach, train and guide interested individuals to enter the exciting world of sports officiating. Officials are used for flag football, volleyball, soccer, softball, and basketball. For further information please contact the intramural sports office or visit http://www.ecu.edu/crw/programs/intramurals/employment.cfm.
How do I sign up?Teams will be able to register after attending the team registration meeting for a team sport. Captains only have to attend one captain's meeting per semester. Once a captain has attended a meeting in that semester, an individual can register their team and by-pass subsequent captain's meetings. The chance to become a captain is only offered a couple of times each year, so be sure to ask the intramural sports staff how you can take advantage of this opportunity. Individuals who would like to participate in a team activity, but are not affiliated with any team are encouraged to come to the meeting in order to obtain assistance in placement on a team. Many individual/dual activities will not have a meeting. There will be a particular day to register in the intramural sports office. .
How do I find out about upcoming activities?Information can be found on the page in addition to various publications within the department. Rules and information packets for activities are available in the intramural sports office. In addition, frequent advertisements appear in The East Carolinian.
What are the levels of competition?Leagues will be offered if sufficient interest exists in men's independent, women's independent, fraternity, sorority, co-rec, faculty/staff/graduate student, and residence halls. In an attempt to equalize competition, various levels of skill have been established.
Gold Leagues are designed for those teams or individuals which are somewhat advanced in sport skills and strategies and/or are motivated to play in a highly competitive atmosphere.
Purple Leagues are designed for those teams or individuals who desire to play recreationally and have some experience and skill in organized sports.
What if I don't have a team to play on or I need players to complete my team? An intramural free agent is an ECU student, faculty or staff who wishes to participate in an intramural sponsored team activity and is not currently a member of a team. Teams may add players to their roster throughout the regular season, provided that those players have not played for another team in the same sport and division (coed, men's, women's) through the end of the regular season.
To have your information included on an activities free agent list or to find additional players, please check the Intramural Sports Free Agent List.
