Policy Regarding University-Excused Absences
The Dean of Students Office issues University-Excused Absences according to the excused absence policy in the ECU Undergraduate Catalog. Please note that this policy is decided by the Faculty Senate. The Dean of Students Office only administers the policy. We will issue a University-Excused Absence for the following reasons, ALL OF WHICH REQUIRE SUFFICIENT DOCUMENTATION:
- DEATH/FUNERAL of an IMMEDIATE family member (parent, sibling or grandparent). Contact our office for time limits.
- Participation in an AUTHORIZED, PREAPPROVED activity or trip as an OFFICIAL REPRESENTATIVE of the University.
- CRISIS situation that is DOCUMENTED and APPROVED by the Dean of Students Office.
ECU does NOT issue University-Excused Absences for reasons including, but not limited to, the following:
- ILLNESS or any other MEDICAL or PSYCHOLOGICAL situation, including hospitalizations, doctor visits, etc. Contact Student Health.
- COURT APPEARANCES – unless you are a CRIME VICTIM and have met with ECU’s Victim Advocate OR you are under SUBPEONA to testify as a witness in a trial. (Documentation is required.)
- FUNERALS for EXTENDED family members (aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) and people not related to you.
- Other events such as WEDDINGS, INTERVIEWS, WORK, CAR TROUBLE, TRIPS, VISITING SICK RELATIVES, etc.
*** Regardless of whether or not an absence is excused, ALL make-up work and attendance policy issues are at the discretion of the INSTRUCTOR! ***
