Expressions is a magazine that serves the needs of the various minority populations among the student body. Published under several names since the 1950’s, Expressions is currently published as a standard magazine format and is issued 3-4 times a year. There's approximately 8 students that work on the magazine’s staff. Distributed throughout campus, Expressions has a minimum circulation of 2,000 and is available free of charge.
Expressions purpose is to provide an alternative voice that addresses special concerns and problems of minority groups in the East Carolina University community. At Expressions, a “minority” is considered to be any group of students that feels outside the “mainstream.” This includes, but is not limited to, African-American, Native American, Hispanic, Jewish, international, non-traditional, differently abled and female students. The magazine provides students with valuable experience in management, editorial writing, advertising, circulation, graphics and production. This experience helps students in locating jobs after graduation while assisting in the financing of their education while in school.
