Benefits for ECU Police Officers




Salary - Starting pay for Police Officers is $29,643 for a BLET graduate. Officers with a General Certification start at $30,400.

Pay for Education - Entry level officers with an Associates degree receive 2% above their base starting salary. Officers with a Bachelors degree receive 4%, and officers with Master's degree receive 6% above their base salary. This ONLY applies to entry-level officers.

Career Banding - The ECU Police Department recognize officers with experience, training, and education. Officers with Intermediate Certificates are hired at the Senior Police Officer level. Officers with Advanced Certificates are hired at the Master Police Officer level.

Special Event Pay - ECU officers have the opportunity to work a large variety of special events such has ball games, dances, retail sales, and mutual aid for extra pay. This usually is one and one half times their hourly rate.

Shift Differential - Officers working night shift get a 10% shift differential. Officers working on patrol rotate to nights every other month.

Uniforms and Equipment - An officer's complete uniform, weapon, and leather goods are furnished by the department. Items are periodically replaced as needed.

Educational Programs - Employees are allowed to take one class per semester, on duty, tuition free. Eligible employees may borrow textbooks for class. Spouses and dependent children may also borrow textbooks for classes.

Hours - ECU Police officers currently work 12 hour shifts, days and nights. Shifts are rotated once a month on the Monday of the first full week.

Vacation Leave - Vacation is earned based on total length of service. New officers earn 7 hours 50 minutes per month. After two years this increases to 9 hours 10 minutes per month. Additional vacation leave is earned at 5, 10, 15, and 20 years of service.

Sick Leave - Sick leave is earned at a rate of 8 hours per month. Sick leave will accrue if not used and can be used to advance your retirement date.

Community Service Leave - Officers are allowed 24 hours per year that can be used for community service. This includes but is not limited to tutoring a child, service to a volunteer organization, and chaperoning your child's field trip.

Residential Requirements - Officers may live any where in the State as long as they can respond to emergency call-ups in a reasonable timeframe.

Medical Coverage - Comprehensive Major Medical Plan. The University contributes the premium for employee coverage. Spouse and Dependent Coverage can be obtained for an additional premium.

Dental Coverage - Full premium paid by employee; spouse and child/children coverage also available.

NC Flexible Spending Accounts - Reimburses you for eligible dependent care or health care expenses, tax free.

Credit Union - The University has its own credit union and employees are also eligible for the State Employees Credit Union.

Teachers and State Employees Retirement Plan - Employee contribution= 6% of annual salary, Employer contribution varies year to year. Defined benefit plan. Under a defined benefit plan, the benefit you receive at retirement is determined based on a benefit formula. The formula determines the amount of your benefit based on your highest four consecutive years of salary, age, and years of service.

Supplemental Retirement Plans - All officers participate in the Supplemental Retirement Income Plan of NC (401K). The University contributes at least 5% of the officer's yearly salary. For a more comprehensive listing of benefits see the Human Resources Benefits summary.
