About the director

Peter Romary serves as both the Director of Student Legal Services and the Director of the ECU Center for Mediation and Risk Management. He has been working with students at ECU since 1994. He is an attorney licensed to practice law in North Carolina, the District of Columbia and before the US Supreme Court as well as being a Certified Arbitrator and Mediator. Peter has been a certified mediator with the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission since 1999. He holds both British and American law degrees. Originally from the UK, Romary is a naturalized US citizen, making him a dual national.

In practice Romary concentrated in civil and criminal litigation, alternative dispute resolution and risk management. He has also consulted on the designing of personal, corporate and educational safety and risk management plans and has lectured on these topics as well as on conflict resolution and mediation around the US and overseas.

For his work, in 2004 Romary received the Ellis Island Medal of Honor in the same year he also received a Knighthood that was “apostolically blessed” by Pope John Paul, II. In addition to this, in 2002 the National Law Journal (the highest subscription legal newspaper in North America) named Romary one of the “Top 40 Trial Lawyers under 40 Years Old in the USA”. In the same year they also awarded Romary their Pro Bono Attorney of the Year Award.

Romary has been honored by 14 States with some of those States highest civilian honors, these include The Order of the Long Leaf Pine (NC); The Order of the Silver Crescent (SC); Colonel Aide De Camp to the Governor (NM); Honorary Citizen and Honorary Colonel of Alabama; Honorary Texan; Honorary Lt. Governor of Alabama and Honorary Lt. Governor of Oklahoma. He is also a Life Member of the Million Dollar Advocates Forum and has received the Honor Medal for Distinguished Public Service from the American Police Hall of Fame.

In 2003 Romary was one of only 52 Men from around the world honored in the Times Square Project for their work combating violence against women--- the project was sponsored by, among others, Lifetime Television, NASDAQ, Hersheys, Liz Claiborne, Reuters, The City of New York and CNBC.
