Influenza Vaccine 2009

Nasal Flu Vaccine: ECU Student currently has limited supplies available of Flumist for vaccination against seasonal influenza. Patients needing vaccination with flumist should schedule an appointment with the pharmacy department (328-6841 option 1).

  • Flumist:  Flu vaccination in the United States is available by two methods, traditional shots, and intranasally administered Flumist.
  • Flumist intranasal vaccine is proven as effective as traditional flu shots but offers some key advantages as the vaccine may be quicker in providing protection from flu infection than shots, and there is no pain associated with its administration due to its nasally administered method.
  • Flumist intranasal vaccination is a safe, approved vaccination for seasonal flu prevention for most adults 5-49 years old.  Certain individuals such as those persons with reduced immunity due to serious health problems, pregnant women, and those with certain long term health problems such as lung disease, blood disorders, kidney disease, high blood pressure, asthma are advised not to receive flumist vaccination but receive a traditional flu shot.
  • For more information concerning flumist vaccination visit the www.cdc.gov/FLU.

Flu Shots: ECU Student Health Service has currently limited supplies of flu shots available for at risk persons who are more susceptible to flu complications.  These persons include

  • Women who will be pregnant during the flu season
  • Anyone with long-term health problems such as (heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, liver disease, asthma, diabetes, anemia)
  • Anyone with a weakened immune system due to disease such as cancer, HIV; or on long term medications which may weaken the immune system such as steroids

Flu shots will only be given to persons in these at risk groups through appointment scheduling with the pharmacy (phone 328-6841 option 1).  Persons seeking a flu shot with one or more of the above risk factors should bring in documentation stating they have such risk such as a doctors note, or physical prescription bottles or prescriptions with medications indicative of their disease.  Persons with questions regarding their flu shot eligibility should call ECU Student Health Service Pharmacy (phone 328-6841 option 3)

On October 15th any flu shot vaccine remaining will be offered to all the general public irregardless of the above mentioned risk factors

Please note all flu vaccinations are in limited supply.  ECU Student Health will not be able to obtain more vaccine for this 09-10 season, and cannot garantee vaccination for all individuals.

We encourage  ECU faculty and staff needing organization for seasonal flu seek other sources for vaccination as limited amounts of flu shot vaccination and flumist vaccine is available for our student population.  ECU faculty and staff should take advantage of several clinics being offered on campus by the Brody School of Medicine which will be advertised via the ECU email announce system

ECU student Health service will advise the student community of the availability of flu vaccination on campus thru this web site and student announce messages.  The U.S. Centers for Disease Control are advising persons seeking flu vaccination do so with traditional flu shots or intranasal flu vaccination as early as possible in order to prevent the effects of seasonal flu.
