How do emergency contraceptive pills work? Emergency contraceptive pills keep a pregnancy from occurring by:
- Inhibiting ovulation (release of an egg)
- Inhibiting a fertilized egg from implanting into the uterus
- Interfering with the process of the fertilized egg passing through the fallopian tubes.
Emergency contraception is not the same thing as an abortion. The method works before a woman is pregnant.
