Welcome!
Thank you for taking the time to learn more about Cultural Awareness at East Carolina University. The Cultural Awareness committee’s theme for the 2007-2008 academic year (Diversity in 3D: Define, Discover, Direct) reflects what I believe to be the three elements of diversity, in a helpful mnemonic. Before anyone can start talking or learning about diversity they must first define what the word means. In this day and age diversity has grown to become a dynamic term that includes race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, religion, gender, and just about any other factor that makes individuals who they are. With this broad definition in mind, we can realize that all people are diverse and deserve the same respect. After we understand this, we can take our definition to discover the diversity that surrounds us. Opening our eyes to consider what makes a person who he/she is will help open new roads of communication and avoid conflicts that arise from differences in diverse backgrounds. The final step in diversity is to direct our complete understanding of diversity to others, and to encourage respect and open minds through all that we do. Please join us this year as we see diversity in three dimensions by attending our events, listed on the Cultural Awareness event calendar.
Thanks and Go Pirates!
