So, You Want To Be A Lawyer

September 12, 2007- 6:00-7:00pm, Bate 2021

In this session, students interested in law will examine their reasons for wanting to study law. Many students choose law to promote their own interests. They usually change course or continue but become discouraged and unhappy. On the other stand, students that study law to serve others find their professional lives rewarding. There will be a discussion of the right and wrong reasons for studying law and the instructor will give examples that demonstrate how service in the profession is fulfilling.

Debbie Smith: “A Life Interrupted”

Friday, September 21, 2007 @ 7PM

Hendrix Theater

After Debbie Smith was raped, she didn’t take the law into her own hands, she wrote it. Just a few short years ago, hundreds of thousands of rape kits sat unexamined, the legal time limit for prosecution slowly ticking away, while offenders who committed unspeakable acts walked free. Debbie Smith changed all that. After being dragged in broad daylight and raped in the woods behind her home while her husband, a police officer, slept upstairs, Smith suffered through the de-humanizing rape-kit exam in hopes of capturing her brutal attacker. It was six years before her rapist was finally identified through a chance DNA test. Debbie vowed to work tirelessly on behalf of women in similar situations. Inspired by actual events
”A Life Interrupted” follows this brave woman’s journey to reclaim her life and put thousands of rapists behind bars.
