At ECU, the College of Engineering and Information Technology said 100 percent of its engineering graduates have gotten a job in their field or are going to graduate school.
Senior Jason Knoesrnschild said the outlook in his field of construction management is looking good.
"A lot of my friends have gotten jobs already," said Jason Knoernschild, ECU senior. "I definitely feel like the majority of my graduating class in construction management already have accepted jobs."
Short & Long Term Objectives
The following are nine objectives of the Department of Construction Management in coordination with the university’s goals. Each objective was developed by department personnel and will be tracked as detailed by the nine parameters listed. The prioritization of these objectives will depend upon resource allocations.
Objective 1: Plan and implement an on campus based Master of Construction Management degree, in conjunction with our current on-line MCM degree program.
Objective 2: Develop additional Undergraduate concentrations to address specializations with sectors of the construction industry to expand student placement and to create specific program attributes that distinguishes ECU as a leader in Construction Management education. In addition to the current commercial emphasis, concentrations envisioned include: Residential (Available Fall 2011), Infrastructure / Heavy Construction (expected to be available for faculty review in Fall 2011), Mechanical/Electrical, Sustainable Construction, and Building Information Modeling.
Objective 3: Develop the Construction Research and Field Teaching (CRAFT) Laboratory located on the ECU North campus. The CRAFT laboratory will stimulate and sustain economic development in Eastern North Carolina by providing facilities, instruction, a platform for workforce development, job training, small business construction management modules, minority contractor workshops, high school summer construction leadership academies, construction career days, and a construction research/field laboratory for testing and developing sustainability centers. Funding will come from industry and funding endowments.
Objective 4: Develop on-line (synchronous / asynchronous) Distance Learning Professional Development opportunities, such as Certificate Programs for construction and related industries.
Objective 5: Enhance existing undergraduate classes through the incorporation of on-line Distance Learning class sections for the goal of establishing an on-line Undergraduate degree opportunity for nontraditional students; i.e.: employed construction personnel interested in pursuing an undergraduate degree.
Objective 6: Since diversity is a central value at East Carolina University, and the university seeks to create an environment that fosters the recruitment and retention of a more diverse student body, faculty, staff, and administration, we will develop strategies to increase the diverse level of student population in our program.
Objective 7: Enhance existing Global education initiatives to include more defined student/faculty exchange programs. This will include potential training programs for industry partners in the global community.
Objective 8: Enhance existing Career/Employment Initiatives for work experiences, internships, and cooperative programs under the direction of the departmental Coordinator for Career Development (CCD).
Objective 9: Expand the Center of Applied Construction for Elementary and Secondary Education (CACESE) and provide nationwide learning units for K-12 classrooms through long-term grant funding and endowments from industry and sponsors.
As the University prepares for its Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) accreditation visit in 2013, a university-wide effort directed at program assessment was undertaken. Participation in this effort was required of all programs. With the aid of external consultants, the university rigorously developed a comprehensive assessment program. As a result, the Department of Construction Management developed its assessment plan containing seven learning outcome goals:
