At their core, computer scientists are problem solvers. These highly skilled individuals are trained to conceptualize, design and implement solutions to a wide range of problems; problems which top upon all aspects of modern society. Computer scientists can be found working with physicists as they advance human knowledge regarding the nature of the universe. Computer scientists can be found working with biologists as they explore the mysteries of the human body. Computer scientists can be found in the company of business executives as they craft strategies to improve business intelligence. And while these three areas are of critical importance to society and mankind they are only a fraction of the fields where trained computer scientists may be found.
The Department of Computer Science at East Carolina University is a great place to obtain the skills necessary to excel in this ever evolving field. Our aims go beyond providing a quality education; we aim to fully equip our graduates with the skills necessary to compete globally in the technology field. To this end we offer a variety of degrees tailored to both the needs of our students as well as the needs of academia and private industry.
Our undergraduate program offers both a traditional Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degree in computer science as well as an applied Bachelor of Arts (B.A) degree in computer science. The primary goal of the B.A. degree is to equip the graduate with practical skills that translate to an area of interest like high technology, business or healthcare. The primary emphasis of the B.S. degree is on the theoretical underpinnings of computer science which makes this program ideal for those considering the graduate study of computer science or a career in an academic environment. We also offer a number of graduate computer science educational opportunities through our Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) and Master of Science in Software Engineering (MSSE) degree programs.
