The United States Travel Care Code is designed to provide travelers within the United States and US travelers abroad with information on how they can reduce the negative impact of their travel and visitor related activities. The Code includes actions that they can take to protect the environment, culture, and history, and support local economies and communities. Travelers are encouraged to review the Code before their trip so that they can incorporate these actions into their travel plans. The Travel Care Code is available to be republished at no cost under the terms of our free license.
WHAT: The TCC is a list of ten simple action items thoughtfully researched and designed to provide travelers with information on how they can reduce the negative impact of their travel and visitor related activities. It is available online for free use and replication. The Code was developed by graduate students, faculty, and staff at the Center for Sustainability at East Carolina University in partnership with Miles Media Inc.
WHY:Modifying the behavior of travelers – even in small and incremental ways, is an important part of minimizing the negative impacts of the world's travel and tourism industry. Educating and informing visitors is therefore a critical part of "green" travel initiatives.
WHO:The United States Travel Care Code has been developed and is managed by the Center for Sustainability located at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. The Code was researched from visitor information and public service announcements globally and orientated to the specific needs and challenges of travel in the US. It has been reviewed by an industry and academic advisory board and supported by launch sponsors, most notably Miles Media – a leading media and publishing agency serving Destination Marketing Organizations (DMOs) globally. The Care code has been developed to focus on the needs of American travelers first with possible international versions created in the future with partner organizations in different countries and/or region.WHEN:The United State Travel Care Code will be launched in the first quarter of 2011 in the United State with 1-2 launch partners – DMOs for major US destinations – eg:the State tourism organization for Florida, Tennessee or Louisiana and/or the cities of Chicago and San Antonio. The plan is then to launch the Travel Care Code nationwide working with other destinations - and travel and tourism partners of all types – organizations, who are happy to publish, publicize and promote the Travel Care Code.
Many individuals and organizations contributed time and effort in assisting in the development of the Travel Care Code and the work of the Center for Sustainable Tourism. We wish in particular to thank our sponsors - East Carolina University which houses and supports the Center, and Miles Media which has supported the development and work of the Renewable Energy in Tourism Initiative and the United States Travel Care Code. We also acknowledge and recognize the work of the Center's Industry Advisory Board.
