Assistant Professor

Dr. Méndez’ research focuses on child language and literacy development. She is particularly interested in early language and emergent literacy skills that support school readiness in bilingual and linguistically diverse preschoolers. Her current research investigates literacy-based approaches to vocabulary instruction for Latino preschoolers and the role of language in promoting school readiness skills, including early math and literacy. Dr. Méndez holds a Bachelor’s degree in Linguistics from York University, Toronto, Canada, a Master’s degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences from Purdue University and a PhD. in Speech and Hearing Sciences from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Prior to joining ECU she held a Post-doctoral Research Fellowship at Temple University. Dr. Méndez has several years of clinical experience as a Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist and has practiced in acute care, educational and family-based settings.
