NOAA Explores Sunken U-boats

In July 2008, ECU researchers participated in an underwater archeological field study of three German U-boats sunk in 1942 during the World War II Battle of the Atlantic.
The study, conducted by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, included collaborators from the UNC-Coastal Studies Institute, Minerals Management Service, the National Park Service and the state of North Carolina.
The three specific sites explored were German U-boats: U-85, U-701, and U-352. These sites are some of the only places in the world where recreational divers can view such historical artifacts. The results of these studies will help scientists understand environmental and cultural factors that contribute to degradation of these sites and will help in the management and preservation of these sites in the future.
