Email Encryption

SoDM staff and faculty are required to use encryption when communicating via email. In short, [sendsecure] MUST be used when sending any sensitive information via email to any individuals or entity outside of the ECU staff, faculty, and resident network, including students and Vidant employees. Similarly, if you receive a confidential email from any individual or entity outside of the ECU staff, faculty, and resident network, you must use Send Secure in sending your reply.

Examples of when to use encryption if an email contains sensitive information.

  1. Communication with Vidant or other partner hospitals and practices
  2. ECU Student and Alumni accounts
  3. Any email address that does not end with @ecu.edu

How to Encrypt Emails.

SODM Informatics recommends the [sendsecure] method.

Type the phrase, [sendsecure] anywhere in the subject line of an email. Be sure to include the brackets. This method works for Outlook 2011, 2013, 2016 and Piratemail.

Note. [sendsecure] is not case sensitive, but the two words must not be separated by a space.
