Heart specialists join ECU Physicians
Dr. Hazaim Alwair

Drs. Hazaim Alwair, Ashesh Buch and Deepa Kabirdas have joined the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University and its group medical practice, ECU Physicians.
Alwair, a cardiothoracic surgeon, has joined ECU as a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences and the East Carolina Heart Institute. He performs adult cardiac operations including robotic and minimally invasive surgery. Alwair has a medical degree from Damascus University and St. George’s Hospital Medical School in London. He completed his general and cardiac surgery training in England and a robotic cardiac surgery fellowship at the ECHI. Alwair is certified as a fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons.
Buch, an interventional cardiologist, has joined the department and the heart institute as an assistant professor. Buch comes to ECU from the University of Wales. He has a medical degree from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom. He trained at University Hospitals of North Staffordshire NHS Trust in England and completed a fellowship in interventional cardiology at Washington (D.C.) Hospital Center.
Buch is certified as a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. His clinical and research interests include coronary intervention and high-risk percutaneous coronary intervention, structural heart interventions, general cardiology and clinical trials.
Kabirdas, a cardiologist, has joined the department and the heart institute as an assistant professor. She comes to ECU from Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia, where she completed a fellowship in cardiology. She also underwent training in cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging at Duke University. She has a medical degree from Chengalpattu Medical College in India and completed residency training in internal medicine at the Cleveland Clinic in Weston, Fla. She is board-certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular diseases, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology.
