Phyllis
N. Horns, RN, DSN, FAAN
Dr. Phyllis N. Horns was named Interim Vice Chancellor for Health
Sciences and Interim Dean of the Brody School of Medicine at East
Carolina University in November 2006. In this role, she is responsible
for guiding the colleges of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences,
and the Laupus Library.
Dr. Horns earned her BSN degree at East Carolina University, MPH degree at the University of North Carolina, PNP certificate at the University of Rochester, and DSN at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Since
1990, she has served as Dean of the East Carolina University School
of Nursing. She served as Interim Vice Chancellor for Health Sciences
at East Carolina University during 2001-2002. From 1981 to 1988,
she was Assistant Dean, Undergraduate Studies, and a member of the
Graduate Faculty at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Before
going to Alabama in 1979, she held positions of staff nurse at UNC
Hospitals and Pitt County Memorial Hospital, faculty at East Carolina
University School of Nursing, and Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in
a family practice of Mt. Olive Physicians Drs. Kornegay and Shackleford.
She
served as Chair of the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission
1997-2000; President of the Council on Collegiate Education for
Nursing, Southern Regional Education Board 1999-2001; and the North
Carolina Center for Nursing’s Board 1997-1999. She was inducted
as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2001. She currently
serves on the NC Institute of Medicine and is President of the NC
Council of Deans and Directors of Baccalaureate and Higher Degree
Nursing Programs.
