Mission

The mission of the Department for Disability Support Services is to provide to individuals with disabilities support services that will enable them to access programs, services, facilities, and activities of the university; to enhance disability awareness among students, staff, and faculty; and to provide academic courses.

Visual Impairments

Accommodations for students who are visually impaired are determined relative to the impact of the disability on program accessibility. ECU maintains an institutional membership to Recordings for the Blind and Dyslexic in order to expedite the delivery of recorded texts. Also available to students are a Braille printer, JAWS (screen reader) software, Optilec text enlargement, and ZoomText computer screen enhancer. Documentation for visual impairments should be prepared by an ophthalmologist and include:

It is very important that students requiring taped texts notify DSS of their need no later than two weeks prior to the start of the semester. Documentation prepared by providers other than opthamologists will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
