East Carolina University is a wonderful place for employers to recruit new
employees. Imagine yourself recruiting at a university with almost 22,000
students and 90,000 alumni from all over the world, an academically and
technologically advanced campus, nationally recognized professional
programs, and a supportive faculty who understand that the end goal of
education is a career; all within a southern culture that creates students
with manners!
Eastern North Carolinians want and deserve access to high quality jobs. The
only way that can occur is for existing industry to expand and for new
industry to be attracted or started. We understand that the university can
help that process of growth by providing well-trained graduates for the
private sector, by doing research in areas where there is commercial
potential, by helping to transfer that technology to the marketplace, and by
working with communities to improve their quality of life and the resulting
attractiveness to outside investment. East Carolina University prides itself
on its distinguished heritage and its continuing pursuit of excellence in
teaching, research, creative enterprise, and service.
ECU, which was founded in 1907, is the third-largest institution of the
16-campus University of North Carolina system. It has a work force of 4,400,
a faculty numbering of about 1,400, and a budget of more than $400 million.
Grants and contracts have increased to more than $40 million a year. By
2008, the number of additional North Carolinians expected to seek
traditional admission to North Carolina's public universities will increase
by almost 50,000. In addition to this growth, there will be an exponential
growth in the number of individuals seeking further education via distance
educational opportunities. This growth is expected to reach an on-campus
enrollment of 27,000 students by 2008, with the bulk of this increase coming
at the undergraduate level. The campus is in the midst of a major building
boom financed in large part by North Carolina voter-approved construction
bonds totaling $190 million.
ECU students come from 98 of North Carolina's 100 counties, 47 states, and
over 40 countries. Of these students, 60 percent are women, 83 percent are
undergraduates, and 20 percent are minorities. ECU has the highest minority
student enrollment of predominantly white institutions within the UNC
system. At the beginning of Fall 2002, ethnic minorities (including American
Indian, Asian, Black Non-Hispanic, and Hispanic) were 18.6% of the
undergraduates, 15% of the graduate students, and 29.5% of the medical
students populations. This minority student enrollment percentage has held
steady over the past 4 years.
Enrollment data shows that the number of female students enrolled at ECU
continues to grow; in fact, the number of female students on campus has
grown by 15% since 1998. As of Fall 2002, nearly 65% of our graduate
students were women, nearly 50% of our medical students were women, and
women made up just under 60% of our entire student body.
The university also continues to add new academic programs at all levels.
The university offers 104 undergraduate degree tracks and 90 graduate degree
tracks. It confers more than 3,800 degrees annually. East Carolina is on the
cutting edge of the use of information technology to enhance teaching and
research on the campus and beyond with distance learning students enrolled
from as far away as Australia.
