The Flow Cytometry-Confocal Microscopy Core Facility - This facility is a research supported resource which is part of the School of Medicine Biotechnology Program. Flow cytometry and Confocal microscopy are powerful techniques based on laser light excitation of fluorescent molecules. Flow cytometry is commonly used to study various aspects of cell function, including apoptosis, cell cycle, and immunophenotype analysis. The facility has two bench top flow analyzers: LSR II 4-laser 11-color flow cytometer and FACScan one laser 3-color cytometer (both Becton Dickinson). There is also a five-color cell sorter (BD FACSVantage) to isolate specific cell subsets from a complex mixture of cell types. Confocal microscopy is used primarily for cellular co-localization studies and three-dimensional reconstruction. The facility has a Zeiss 510 Laser-scanning Confocal Microscope which is capable of three-channel fluorescence imaging. Other instrumentation which is now part of the core facility are an iCys Laser Scanning Cytometer (Compucyte), which has similar capabilities as flow cytometry for samples on a slide or multiwell plate, and a PALM Laser Capture Microdissection system (Carl Zeiss), which allows excision and removal of specific target cells from a tissue or cell culture.
The Core Imaging Center is located on the third floor in room 3S08 of the Brody School of Medicine Building. The Center houses a Zeiss PALM LCM (Laser Capture Microdissection) and Zeiss LSM 700 laser scanning confocal microscope with on-stage incubation. The center open to all users at ECU and the corporate community on a fee basis. Training and technical support are available for new and trained users. The Core Imaging Center is a shared resource for the ECU community, providing state-of-the art equipment to meet specialized microscopy needs in Laser Capture Microdissection and Laser Scanning Fluorescent Confocal Microscopy.

Genome Sequencing Core Laboratory - The Genome Sequencer FLX System is an automated DNA sequencing system capable of preparing, amplifying and sequencing a library of DNA fragments in a massively parallel fashion. The instrument can sequence de novo or re-sequence an average of at least 100 million bases per sequencing run and read lengths of 400 bases. The core laboratory consists of all the components necessary for ultra-high throughput sequencing experiments, including the Genome Sequencer FLX Instrument and accessories; software to generate basecalls and interpret the raw reads; and the reagent kits required for library construction, clonal amplification, and sequencing.
Metabolomics Core Facility - LINCOplex 200 Multiplexer (powered by Luminex xMAP technology). Applications: Protein Expression profiling, Gene Expression profiling, Diagnostics (Immunodiagnostics and Genetic disease diagnostics).
Phosphor-Imaging/Fluorescence Imaging (PhIFI) core facility - 2D imaging of chemiliumscent, flourescent, and radioactive gel data, tissue sections and microarray data.
