About the EC Scholars Program
If you're a candidate for the EC Scholar award from East Carolina University, you've probably got quite a story. You're one of the best students to ever come out of your high school. Your test scores are through the roof. Your list of extracurricular activities is as long as your arm. Your family, friends, and teachers all know you 're going to be a huge success. There's a crowd of colleges vying for your attention, and they've all got a story to tell you.
The EC Scholar award is offered to the best of our entering freshman class, those who have what it takes to write their own huge success stories. This is the most prestigious scholarship offered at East Carolina. It is worth up to $10,000 per year for four years.
EC Scholars get a college experience that goes beyond the ordinary and includes rigorous academics, leadership development, community service, art and cultural events, and fun. You will get the best professors and work with top researchers. You will be part of a tight-knit group of friends and colleagues who share your interests and dedication.
Study Abroad
Study abroad is one of the highlights of the program. All EC Scholars are encouraged to participate in study abroad, and the Scholar's award includes a $5,000 stipend for summer study abroad. Scholars work with their advisers to design a foreign-study program tailored to their individual interests and goals. Scholars may also choose a semester at a foreign university or another type of international exchange. The EC Scholar award may be used for study abroad.
A Friend Next Door
EC Scholars are required to live in the Honors/International Student Scholars residence hall during the Freshman year. This is an important and popular feature of the EC Scholars program. Scholars live and learn in the company of other highly motivated Honors students. It's like having a ready-made group of friends waiting for you when you get to ECU. You participate as a group in seminars, workshops, team-building activities, and special projects designed to develop a real sense of closeness and camaraderie.
Learning Extends Outside of the Classroom, Laboratory and Studio
You can't learn everything in a classroom, and Scholars enjoy a number of outdoor adventures and social and cultural events that offer friends, fun, and fellowship. Incoming Scholars tackle the ECU Ropes Course and look forward to trips, retreats, and other activities offered throughout the year. ECU is a lively center for the performing arts, and Scholars can often attend plays, concerts, and shows at no charge.
Service to Others
EC Scholars are selected, in part, for their demonstrated commitment to service. During their first semester at ECU, they are introduced to a variety of service projects. Working with faculty in a special seminar, EC Scholars develop individual service plans, create a group service project, and get involved in a number of campus and community outreach programs.
Personal Attention
As an EC Scholar, if you have any questions or need any help, many people are available to assist you in making the transition to university life. They will help you solve problems with academics and campus life. They are always interested in sharing your ideas and brainstorming. The office is there to help you find solutions that work for you.
