From the Chief Diversity Officer

Diversity at ECU is inclusive of all.

The Office of Institutional Diversity (OID) strives to integrate the cultural, operational and human diversity of ECU to create an environment that cultivates success.  Part of our definition of success includes environments that actively impact the retention of students, faculty and staff.  It is our overarching goal to promote environments that are inclusive and welcoming. We are well aware this can only be achieved through university collaborations and leadership.

The current budget times highlight the need for university diversity collaborations; historically in our society when the economy has faltered the instances of intolerance and actions motivated by fear have risen. OID is committed to working within our ECU community to move forward with deliberation, in a pro-active, strategic manner that will further ECU’s diversity goals and foster community dialogue.

This year our office will continue to serve as an advocate for diversity. Our primary focus will be educating the community in a way that recognizes that we are all at different stages/experiences within our lives and that we are human beings that are individual in beliefs, upbringing/values.  We hope to promote environments that respect those differences while celebrating the fact that they all exist together in an institution that encourages learning and dialogue about their significance.

This year we also want to highlight the wealth of faculty talent we have on our campus. There are numerous faculty who are doing significant diversity- related research and you will be able to learn more about them throughout the Heritage and Social Justice Months as they participate as monthly speakers, guest lecturers, and presenters in events.

What do we want from you?

We would like you to ask yourself the following questions: How can OID support you in your success?  Have you let us know? What new creative ideas do you bring to the table that impact the diversity-environment here at ECU?  Have you suggested them to OID?

Please take full advantage of our website to explore opportunities for collaboration with us and do not hesitate to stop by our office for further discussion about your ideas or suggestions.  It is my sincere hope that our office can serve as a resource and support for your success!
