Classes in Second Life
Thank you for your interest in Second Life at East Carolina University! Second Life is a host of many courses at ECU, and a list of active classes can be found in the list below. Second Life is not limited to college courses however, but can also be used for experiments, groups, and events.
A number of courses have been hosted on our Virtual Campus since its start in 2007. The following is a list of current and recent courses, and a few of the things they have done in Second Life.

Activities include scavenger hunts across the virtual world, in-class lectures, student presentations, and more. Students also have the oppertunity to build their own objects, and decorate their student spaces. |

BITE-5389 Web 2.0 Learning Environments & Virtual Teams |
Students investigate the role of Web 2.0 technologies in formal or informal learning environments, while considering the potential learning impact of open and free courseware transforming education. This course is taught in Second Life, with a variety of interactive, teacher-led and learner-led activities across virtual worlds. |

Dr. Deale’s students met with her and each other on Second Life and presented their projects about hospitality and tourism in other cultures in the ECU virtual hotel. |

Classes set to begin in Fall 2010, students from the face to face lectures will sit with their online class peers to collaborate and learn project management practices together. |

A summer course for 2010, students met in Second Life for a lecture on Biometric security, and then experienced biometrics in a virtual building. Protections included CAC cards, a fingerprint scanner, and a retina scanner. |

Comprehensive systems used to control projects to achieve technical, managerial, and economic objectives. Successful project management can be defined as having achieved the project objectives within time and cost at the desired performance/technology level while utilizing the assigned resources effectively and efficiently. This course covers the basic skills and knowledge required to manage projects in various IT settings. Emphasis is on management controls, computer applications, human factors, and productivity. |

Other Programs and Events in Second Life

Research Survey |
For three days we hosted a survey for ECU's School of Business inside Second Life. Second Life users were able to visit ECU and participate in the survey. Nearly 500 people particpated in the survey before it was closed. |
Lessons-In-Leadership |
Students meet in the virtual world to discuss leadership theories, styles, and concepts through discussions and interactive activities. Topics explored include defining leadership., values & character development, ethics, and followership. By the end of the program, students will be able to explain their philosophy of leadership. |
Nursing |
The nursing program has been very active in Second Life. Recently they have extended their 50 year celebrations into Second Life. We are also working to build a patient simulations into Second Life so students can participate virtually. |
