Descriptions of scholarships available for the 2011-2012 academic year are listed below.  To be considered for a scholarship, you must complete and submit your scholarship application(s), 3 reference letters, and an unofficial copy of your transcript from OneStop. Please read carefully; there are separate applications for some scholarships which might also require additional information.

Scholarship recipients will be notified via letter to their preferred mailing address in the spring of 2011. Recipients MUST attend the Scholarship Ceremony on April 5, 2011 at 3:00 PM in the Willis Building to receive their scholarship.

James W. Batten Research Fellow Scholarship. Awarded to upper level undergraduate or graduate students enrolled full time in the College of Education. Must have a GPA of 2.5 or above with a demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in education. Annual award of $1500 is subject to availability. Two $1,500 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Osmond Mitchell Endowment Fund. Awarded to undergraduate or graduate students from Craven County enrolled full time in a teacher education degree program. A minimum GPA of 3.0 for undergraduates and 3.5 for graduates required. Selection based on demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in education. May be renewable once. Award amount is $6,000 and is ($3,000 for each of two semesters) subject to availability. Six $6,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Betty M. Long Memorial Scholarship Fund. Awarded to a junior, senior or graduate student enrolled full time in the College of Education. Academic standards of eligibility must be met. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Suzanne M. Wester, M.D. Scholarship. Awarded to a graduate student enrolled full time in the College of Education with a demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in education. Annual award of $5,000 ($2,500 for each of two semesters) is subject to availability. One $5,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Charles R. Coble Scholarship. Awarded to a deserving undergraduate student enrolled full time and majoring in education. Minimum GPA of 3.0 required. Selection based on demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in education. Award amount is 1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Laughinghouse-Leary Scholarship.  Awarded to a deserving student from Pitt or Craven County who is majoring in Education, with a concentration in mathematics, science, vocation or elementary studies.  One $300 award available for 2011-2012 ($150 for each of two semesters).

Eloise Faison Teacher Scholarship.  Awarded to a full-time or part-time rising junior or senior with a 2.5 GPA or higher. Recipient must have a desire to be a classroom teacher.  Award amount is $2,500 ($1,250 for each of two semesters) subject to availability.  Four $2,500 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Don and Linda Lassiter Scholarship.  Awarded to undergraduate students who have been accepted or who are enrolled at least part-time and who will be pursuing a degree in the College of Education. The Scholarship Selection Committee (Committee) will award the scholarship based upon the following criteria in order of priority:

  • First preference will be given to first-generation college students from Johnston County, North Carolina.  If there are no qualified candidates from Johnston County, otherwise qualified students from eastern North Carolina can be considered for the scholarship.
  • Demonstrated financial need as determined by the Committee.
  • At least a 2.5 minimum projected or actual GPA.

The scholarship may be renewed through the recipient’s senior year upon continued availability of funds and maintenance of the scholarship eligibility criteria.  Award amount is $3,125 ($1,562.50 for each of two semesters) subject to availability.  One $3,125 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

The Sylvan Learning Center of Elizabeth City/Neal and Michelle Tynch Scholarship. Awarded to an undergraduate student enrolled full time in the College of Education. Student must be admitted to Upper Division with at least 3.0 GPA. The recipient must demonstrate a commitment to the study of and a career in education and must be from one of the following counties: Gates, Perquimans, Pasquotank, Chowan, Camden, Currituck, Dare, Martin, Washington, Bertie, Hertford. One $1,500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

This two-year scholarship will be awarded to legal residents of the United States who are enrolled full-time in teacher education and meet the following criteria:

  • Recipients must have a GPA of at least 2.5 and be:
    • Rising juniors when accepted
    • Admitted to Upper Division
    • Successfully passed Praxis
  • First preference will be given to students majoring in the following high need areas:
    • Special Education
    • Middle Grades math and science
    • High School math and science
  • Second preference will be given to students majoring in music education.
  • The scholarship will be available to traditional undergraduate students for their junior and senior years and who are not receiving other significant scholarship funds such as the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship.
  • Recipients will be expected to teach for at least two years in one of the 29 Latham Clinical Schools Network counties and school systems (Beaufort, Bertie, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Edenton-Chowan, Edgecombe, Franklin, Gates, Greene, Halifax, Roanoke Rapids City, Weldon City, Hyde, Johnston, Jones, Lenoir, Martin, Nash/Rocky Mount, Northampton, Onslow, Pamlico, Pitt, Sampson, Clinton City, Tyrrell, Washington, Wayne or Wilson). For every year they don't teach towards the two-year commitment, they must pay back the amount of scholarship money they received from this Fund each year.

Award amount is $10,000 ($2,500 for each of four semesters) and is subject to availability. Two $10,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year to two rising juniors meeting the above criteria.

Kay Hall Chesson Scholarship Fund. Awarded to a student enrolled full time in the College of Education Department of Business and Information Technologies Education. Minimum GPA of 3.0 required. Award amount is $1000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

James White Scholarship. Awarded to a student enrolled in the College of Education Department of Business and Information Technologies Education, majoring in Information Technologies. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Pi Omega Pi Marjorie Harrison Scholarship. Awarded to a freshmen seeking a licensure in Business Education. Award amount is subject to availability. One scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.  

Pi Omega Pi Lena Ellis Scholarship. Awarded to a sophomore seeking a licensure in Business Education. Award amount is subject to availability. One scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.  

Pi Omega Pi Audrey V. Dempsey Scholarship. Awarded to a junior seeking a licensure in Business Education. Award amount is subject to availability. One scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.  

Pi Omega Pi Thomas Clay Williams Scholarship. Awarded to a senior seeking a licensure in Business Education. Award amount is subject to availability. One scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Departmental Scholarship Application

Frank G. Fuller Fellowship. Available to a full time graduate student majoring in counselor education. Selection is based on scholarship with a minimum GPA of 3.0, demonstrated commitment to the study of Counselor Education and to a career in school counseling, and any other criteria determined appropriate by the Scholarship Selection Committee. Award amount is $325 ($162.50 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $325 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Dr. Joseph Ciechalski Counselor Education Scholarship.  Available to a part-time graduate student majoring in counselor education with a 3.0 GPA and completion of at least 12 semester hours in COAD courses.  Applicant must be currently working as an elementary, middle, high school or special ed. teacher.  Award amount is $750 ($375 for each of two semesters) subject to availability.  Three $750 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Russell-Smith Fellowship in Adult Education.  Awarded to a graduate student pursuing a master’s degree in Adult Education.   Selection is based on academic ability with a minimum 3.5 grade point average.  Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) subject to availability.  One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Elementary Education

Andy Roos Memorial Scholarship. Available to assist deserving students enrolled full time and majoring in elementary education. Selection based on scholarship with minimum GPA of 3.3 to qualify. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Doris N. Burnette Scholarship. Awarded to students accepted for admission or currently enrolled full time as an undergraduate student in elementary education. Selection based on scholarship and citizenship. Award amount is $1000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. Three $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Mary Lois Staton Scholarship. Awarded to upper-level undergraduate students enrolled full time and majoring in elementary education. Eligible recipients selected based upon merit, although need may be a secondary consideration. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Clyda Batton Memorial Scholarship. First preference is given to an outstanding graduate of Smithfield-Selma High School enrolled full time in the College of Education and majoring in elementary education. Award amount is $1000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

J. Worth Carter Scholarship. Awarded to a rising junior or senior undergraduate student from eastern North Carolina enrolled full time in either elementary education or middle grades education. First preference is to students from Cumberland County. Selection based on scholarship, need, and citizenship. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kara Lynn Corey Fennell Scholarship. Awarded to a rising junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled full time in elementary education, Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Jean Garris Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled full time and majoring in elementary, middle grades, or special. Award amount is $300 ($150 for each of two semesters) and subject to availability. One $300 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Middle Grades Education

Jean Garris Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled full time and majoring in elementary, middle grades, or special education. Award amount is $300 ($150 for each of two semesters) and subject to availability. One $300 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

J. Worth Carter Scholarship. Awarded to a rising junior or senior undergraduate student from eastern North Carolina enrolled full time in either elementary education or middle grades education. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in Middle Grades Education with a concentration in social studies for the 2011-2012 academic year.

History Education

Faye Marie Creegan Scholarship.Awarded to a rising senior enrolled full time in the College of Education and preparing for certification in the teaching of social studies in the middle or secondary grades. Minimum 3.0 GPA. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded to a student majoring in History Education for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Reading Education

Becky Keith Ledford Memorial Scholarship. Available to a graduate student enrolled full time or part time and majoring in reading education with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Candidate must be qualified to hold a teaching license in reading or equivalent. Selection based on demonstrated ability to teach through teaching or clinical internship experience. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Special Education

Sandra Hopfengardner Warren Scholarship. Awarded to an undergraduate student from Greene County, NC pursuing a degree in special education. Award based on academic ability, academic major and other criteria as determined by the selection committee. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Jean Garris Scholarship. Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled full time and majoring in elementary, middle grades, or special. Award amount is $300 ($150 for each of two semesters) and subject to availability. One $300 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Kallam/Moore Scholarship.Awarded to a rising senior enrolled full time in special education. Minimum GPA of 3.5 required. Selection based on demonstrated commitment to the study of special education and interest in working with exceptional children. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

John T. Richards Scholarship.  Awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student enrolled full time in special education. A minimum 3.0 GPA required. Selection based on demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in special education.  Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) subject to availability.  One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Tony R. Banks Scholarship in Special Education.Awarded to a rising junior or senior student enrolled full time and admitted to Upper Division majoring in Special Education. Scholarship will be awarded based on academic ability, academic major, demonstrated commitment to the study of and a career in special education, and other criteria as determined appropriate by the selection committee. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Burney & Judy Warren Scholarship. Award to rising senior or graduate student who is enrolled full time and majoring in Special Education.  Student must have a 3.5 GPA.  Demonstrated commitment to the study of special education and interest working with learning disabled children. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Angel Boberg-Webb Scholarship.  Awarded to a rising senior majoring in Special Education with at least a 2.5 GPA each semester who is a resident of eastern North Carolina.  The selected recipient will agree to:  be featured on the FSN-ENC webpage, including pictures; be featured in newspaper articles, including pictures; attend the annual FSN-ENC Festival of Trees preview party in December; send a thank you letter to FSN-ENC; be interviewed by FSN-ECN board members in the Spring of the Scholarship year to provide feedback on the scholarship opportunity. One $1000 award available for 2011-2012 ($500 for each of two semesters).

ECU Pathways.Tuition awarded to undergraduates in upper division pursuing a bachelors in special education adapted curriculum, and to alternative licensure students pursuing special education adapted curriculum initial or add-on licensure, and to students pursuing a master's degree in special education, low-incidence disabilities. Upon completion, scholars fulfill a service obligation whereby they work with children with documented disabilities for two years for every academic year tuition support is received. Application

Ralph Brimley Enrichment Fund. Available to deserving part-time or full-time graduate students enrolled in a program in the Department of Educational Leadership. Selection based on potential for providing distinctive service in the elementary and/or secondary schools of North Carolina. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Mack and Margaret Coble Doctoral Fellowship. Awarded to a qualified candidate enrolled full time in the EdD program in Educational Leadership. Award amount is $1,000 ($500 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $1,000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Diane and Chip Linville Scholarship. Awarded to a graduate student enrolled full time in the Department of Educational Leadership. A minimum 3.0 GPA is required. Mildred Daniels Southwick Award. Awarded to a library science major enrolled full time who demonstrates a commitment to a career in reference librarianship. Recipient and award amount determined by the department and is subject to availability. One $1000 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year. Scholarship Application Form

Emily Boyce Fellowship Award. Awarded to graduate students enrolled part-time or full-time in the master of library science degree program. To be eligible, a student must have completed at least 18 semester hours of graduate study in the MLS program with a GPA of 3.5 or higher on all graduate work, including minimum of B grades in all MLS coursework. Selection based on demonstrated potential for community leadership and evidence of commitment to career in library administration/management. Library & Information Studies Outstanding Graduate Award. The Outstanding Student award recognizes outstanding scholarship as evidenced by a combination of grade point average, leadership skills, and research potential.  The faculty selects the recipient(s) from among the five students {and this can be five from each program} who have the highest grade point averages and the highest number of hours earned in the MLS {MS, MAEd) progam(s). Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Diane Kester Innovator Award.The award recognizes students’ innovative practices within the school library media program as evidenced by a combination of grade point average, creative approaches toward the completion of class projects, commitment to service to the professional through service in professional organizations, contributions to their community and a commitment to the ideals of collaboration through support of peers and colleagues. Department faculty nominate potential recipients and their portfolios and other supporting evidence is used to determine the recipient. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

ECU Noyce Scholars Program View Details 

Floyd and Pauline Mattheis Scholarship. Awarded to a qualified student enrolled full time and majoring in science education. Award amount is $500 ($250 for each of two semesters) and is subject to availability. One $500 scholarship will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Betty Abernathy Scholarship.Awarded to deserving students who have been accepted to East Carolina University, have a 3.0 weighted high school GPA, and demonstrate a commitment to the study of and a career in science education. The scholarship award shall be for one academic year (two semesters). At the discretion of the Abernathy Scholars Selection Committee, the scholarship may be renews as long as the recipient continues to meet the eligibility requirements. Three $2,500 scholarships will be awarded for the 2011-2012 academic year. Application.


Other Scholarship Opportunities

East Carolina University Retired Faculty Association Undergraduate Scholarship. Children of East Carolina University Faculty (active or retired) are invited to apply for the ECURFA Undergraduate Scholarship. The amount of the award for 2010-2011 will be $1,500 ($750 for each of two semesters).

Depending upon availability of funds and assuming the recipient is in good standing and maintains at least a 3.0 grade point average, the scholarship may be renewed through the recipient's senior year (not to exceed a total of eight semesters). After the 2010-2011 academic year, the annual scholarship award amount may vary depending upon the amount of funds available for this scholarship.

The scholarship shall be made available to children of active or retired ECU faculty who have been accepted for admission or who are currently enrolled as full-time undergraduate students at ECU. Students must be pursuing their first undergraduate degree and have a projected or actual collegiate GPA of at least 3.0.

Mary Morrow-Edna Richards Scholarship
Applicants must be North Carolina residents enrolled in a teacher education program. They must be in the JUNIOR YEAR OF COLLEGE and willing to teach in the public schools of North Carolina for at least two (2) years following graduation, and be encouraged to become members of the NCAE following graduation.

Delta Kappa Gamma Society
Applicant must be female and from one of the following counties:  Camden, Chowan, Currituck, Gates, Pasquotank, Perquimans or Tyrrell.  Must be a college junior or senior in the fall of 2009 and majoring in education.  Application deadline is March 1, 2009.  Contact for application and information:  Mrs. Jean S. State Farm Companies Foundation Doctoral Dissertation Award
Applicants must have completed a major portion of the doctoral program and at the dissertation state of doctoral work.  Applicant must be a US citizen and have a dissertation topic that focuses on improving K-12 public education to meet current and future economic needs. Student must be nominated by a supervisory professor or faculty advisor.
