For KB I had a friend once step forward then step behind when no one else could see that I was standing in line ready to choose the colors we care so much about that keep us company but what we wear in choosing is never up to us.
I didn't know her very well but then I did not let myself be known so when I heard and saw her name when I read on the day how it was said I don't remember what I was doing that was so important in what I did or might have done. Then it came to me suddenly like Swans at Lake Mattamuskeet the lost bird she was so angry about at me for not caring enough and the next day I woke up with these words in my head that have been with me ever since words have come because I thought I'd have time some day to write them down -- I had a friend once step forward then step behind when no one else could see -- not even me. --Tom
