Master of Arts Degree in EnglishConcentrations are available in creative writing, linguistics and TESL, literature, multicultural literature, rhetoric and composition, and technical and professional communication. A bibliography and research methods course 3 s.h. One composition or linguistics course, selected from ENGL 5500, 5502, 6520, 6530, 6615, 6625 3 s.h. Two literature seminars (seminars are identified in the course descriptions below) 6 s.h. English electives or courses in a concentration (with prior permission of the Graduate Committee may include up to 6 s.h. of graduate courses taken as a minor in another department) 15 s.h. A thesis, demonstrating the student's ability to gather, arrange, and interpret material which bears on a particular problem. Creative writing and technical communication theses options are available to qualified students 3 s.h. Research Skills Requirement: A reading knowledge of a foreign language. Students emphasizing technical and professional writing, linguistics, rhetoric and composition, and other suitable fields may substitute an appropriate level of computer skills. A comprehensive qualifying examination, to be taken during the second or third semester of residence. A final oral examination on the thesis; subject matter from course work may also be part of the examination.
