Michael Aceto taught linguistic science at the University of Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras and Old Dominion University before joining the faculty at ECU in 2000. His primary research areas are sociolinguistics, diachronic linguistics, creole languages, and Englishes around the world. His published work has mostly made use of primary data gathered in the field in Panama, Barbuda, St. Eustatius, and Dominica. His articles have appeared in Language in Society, English World-Wide, American Speech, Journal of Pidgin and Creole Languages, and in several volumes of collected articles. His most recent book project is Contact Englishes of the Eastern Caribbean, published by John Benjamins in the Varieties of English around the World series. Aceto is also interested in the interface of language and cognition as well as the perceived divide between spirituality and science. His future work aspires to bring the discipline of linguistics in contact with the millennia of works and thought by Buddhist scholars. Aceto is also Adjunct Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at ECU.
