Gary R. Redding received his M.A. in English, concentrating in Multicultural Literature, in 2005 and joined the ECU faculty the same year. His Masters thesis, "Beyond the Veil: The Black Family," examined the effects of slavery and colonization on the modern day black family. He was raised in the historic crossroads Resettlement community of Tillery, NC, and in July 2004, he presented his paper, "The Tillery Resettlement: Breaking The Hold of Colonization," at the annual Association of Caribbean Studies Conference in Paris, France. His three academic travels to Belize, Central America included study at the University of Belize and a four week law internship in the Belize Judicial System. Understanding the history of his community and where he comes from have been at the center of his education. He continues to stay connected to his northeastern NC community in many positive ways, including serving as a 2005 summer camp counselor for at risk youth and as the youngest Chairperson for the Concerned Citizens of Tillery, a twenty-five-year-old non-profit social change organization.
