C.W. Sullivan III is the author, editor, or co-editor of ten volumes, among them Welsh Celtic Myth in Modern Fantasy (1989); Fenian Diary: Denis B. Cashman on board the Hougoumont, 1867-1868 (2001); The Mabinogi: A Book of Essays (1996); Young Adult Science Fiction (1999); Worldviews and the American West: The Life of the Place Itself (2000); and Herbal and Magical Medicine: Traditional Healing Today (1992); he also edits The Children's Folklore Review. In 2000, Sullivan was named a Distinguished Professor for Teaching at East Carolina University by the University of North Carolina Board of Governors; in 2001 he received an East Carolina University Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Research and was awarded a Distinguished Research Professorship in English by the Board of Trustees; and in 2003, he was named Harriot College Distinguished Professor of Arts and Sciences. Not all of Sullivan's awards have been for academic or scholarly achievement; in his late teens and early twenties, he won two gold medals kayaking in internationally-sanctioned whitewater competition.
