Department of English Scholarship Application

1. The North Carolina Teaching Fellows Program

One of the most prestigious scholarship programs in North Carolina provides a $26,000 scholarship to 400 outstanding high school seniors interested in teaching. East Carolina University Teaching Fellows participate in academic seminars, leadership development opportunities, professional internships, and social and cultural experiences. Throughout the four years, East Carolina University Teaching Fellows also work as tutors, travel with other Fellows, study in classes offered through the Honors Program, perform service work, plan recruitment initiatives and serve on various committees.

Upon acceptance of the scholarship, the student agrees to teach for four years following graduation from college in one of North Carolina's public schools, charter schools, or United States government schools. Licensure areas include: Birth-Kindergarten, Elementary Education (K-6), Middle Grades Education (6-9), Secondary Education (9-12) and K-12 (Art, Music, Exercise and Sports Science.)

Awards in-state tuition and fees to one sophomore, junior, or senior English major who has both a demonstrated financial need and a GPA of 3.0 or better. Applicants need not be in-state students, but must have completed 36 hours at ECU by the end of the fall semester. The amount of the award is generally $1,500. Students are notified about this scholarship opportunity, and a recipient is selected in the spring semester for the following academic year. The application process usually includes: 1) cover letter from the applicant; 2) a completed scholarship application form (available in the English Department office); 3) documentation of financial need (tax returns from the applicant and/or parents or guardians is usually sufficient); 4) an interview with the Student Services and Scholarships committee.

4. The University Book Exchange Scholarship

Awarded to a junior English major with a GPA of at least 3.5 who has completed at least 36 hours at ECU by the end of the fall semester, and who exhibits potential in the field of English. The award is for $500, paid in two installments of $250. Students are notified about this scholarship opportunity, and a recipient is selected in the spring semester for the following academic year. The application process includes: 1) cover letter from the applicant; 2) a completed scholarship application form (available in the English Department office); 3) a resume; 4) a one-page type-written statement of goals as an English major.

5. The Russell Christman Memorial Scholarship

Named for Russell Christman, an English Department instructor who was killed in a car accident in 1976. The scholarship was established by his parents, and is given to the junior English major who most typifies Russs spirit: vivacious, caring, energetic, and involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Academic merit is a factor in choosing the recipient, but character is given greater weight. The amount of the award is generally $500.00. Students are nominated by instructors in the English Department, and a recipient is selected in the spring semester for the following academic year. Eligible applicants must have completed 36 hours at ECU by the end of the fall semester. The application process for nominees includes: 1) cover letter from the nominee; 2) a completed scholarship application form (available in the English Department office); 3) a resume; 4) an interview with the student services and scholarships committee.

6. The Paul Farr Memorial Essay Contest

Named in honor of a former faculty member of the English Department, the contest was established by Paul and Marie Farr before Paul's death in 1976. The contest encourages excellence in undergraduate expository writing, particularly emphasizing clarity and elegance in prose. Essays from both English and Women's Studies courses are eligible. The amount of the award is generally $100. Essays written during the current academic year are submitted by instructors. They are considered anonymously by the Student Services and Scholarships committee. A recipient of the award is selected in the spring semester.

7. The John D. and Dorothy C. Ebbs Fellowship Endowment Fund

Established at ECU with contributions made to the ECU Foundation by Curtis Ebbs and Laura Benjamin, in honor of their late parents. Dr. John D. Ebbs was an English Professor at ECU for more than 27 years. The fellowship is awarded to a graduate student who has been accepted for admission and is enrolled full-time in the English Departments Master's Degree program. Criteria for selection are: 1) academic merit (at least 3.5 collegiate GPA); 2) demonstrated commitment to the study of English; 3) other. The amount of the award is generally $1,500. A recipient is selected in the spring semester for the following academic year. The award may be renewed for one additional year.
