SullivanFenian Diary: Denis B. Cashman on Board the Hougoumont, 1867-1868, by C.W. Sullivan III, was published in June by Wolfhound Press, Dublin, Ireland.  Denis B. Cashman was arrested in Dublin in 1867, convicted of felony treason, imprisoned in London, and then transported to Australia aboard the Hougoumont--the last official convict ship from England to Australia. Sullivan's book presents Cashman's diary of that 1867-1868 journey along with poetry by Cashman and other Fenian prisoners, and two essays --"Denis B. Cashman: Irishman, American, Fenian" and "Some Notes Toward a Rhetorical Analysis of Cashman's Hougoumont Diary" written by Sullivan.  Cashman's original diary is currently housed in East Carolina University Manuscript Collection. Sullivan's book can be ordered through www.booksirish.com.

Laura Micciche's review essay, "Writing Through Trauma: The Emotional Dimensions of Teaching Writing," appeared in Composition Studies 29.1 (Spring 2001). The review examines Writing and Healing: Toward an Informed Practice by Anderson and MacCurdy, and Bodily Discourses: When Students Write About Abuse and Eating Disorders by Payne.  Both books discuss connections between student writing about trauma and the social contexts in which trauma happens and is understood.  According to Micciche, "... the editors and contributors convincingly argue that teachers need to have a repertoire of skills for responding to such writing and an approach to pedagogical theory that takes this reality into account." Peter Makuck's "Poems of Disciplined Action," an essay review of Pearly Everlasting by Thomas Reiter, appeared in the summer issue of The Laurel Review. For an excerpt, click on the title.
