Sherry Southard has been named editor for "Recent & Relevant" quarterly column for Technical Communication. Her editorship began with Technical Communication 49.1 (February 2002). ECU faculty and graduate students helping monitor journals include Christine Cranford, Brent Henze, Chad Holliday, Cindy Rayburn, and Janice Tovey. As assistant editor, graduate student Chrissie Rouse both monitors journals and completes other tasks necessary to prepare the column manuscript for publication. Abstracts for current articles submitted by students in English 6730 (Issues in Technical and Professional Communication) are also included. On January 22, 2002, C.W. Sullivan III was one of several scholars from the United States, Ireland, and Australia invited to the residence of Sean O'Huiginn, the Ambassador of Ireland, in Washington, DC. The Ambassador hosted a reception for the 2002 winners of grants from the Irish American Cultural Institute. Sullivan and the others received plaques naming them IACI award winners and checks to help further their research. Sullivan received the grant for his proposal "Bound for Australia: The Rhetoric of the Convict Diary," a study which will build on his recent book, Fenian Diary: Denis B. Cashman on board the Hougoumont, 1867-1868.
