Awards & Appointments Congratulations to the following students who will receive awards and scholarships for the 2002-2003 academic year: Katherine Hill, recipient of the Gravely Foundation Award given to the English major with the highest GPA at the end of the fall semester of his or her junior year. Judy Clark, recipient of the Charles and Patricia Moore Scholarship in English which awards in-state tuition and fees to a sophomore, junior, or senior English major who has both a demonstrated financial need and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Gary Redding, recipient of the Russell Christman Memorial Award, established by the parents of Russell Christman after his death in a car accident in 1976. It is given to the junior English major who most typifies Russ's spirit: vivacious, caring, energetic, and involved in a wide range of extra-curricular activities. Ashley Brooke Medlin, recipient of the UBE award in English. The University Book Exchange Scholarship is awarded to a junior English major with a GPA of at least 3.5 and who exhibits potential in the field of English. Dawn Marie West, winner of the Paul Farr Memorial Essay Contest, so named in honor of a former faculty member in the English Department, which encourages excellence in undergraduate expository writing, particularly emphasizing clarity and elegance in prose.
On August 20, the W. Keats Sparrow English 1200 Awards were presented. Amanda Johnson received first place recognition for her paper, "Life in Southern Mill Villages, 1900s." Kim Menard received second place honors for her "Letter to a Soldier." Sarah Jones took third place for her paper, "Training the Parent for Sport." Honorable mention recognition was awarded to Nikki Roberts for "Railroads in Hamlet," and to Leonard John Lanier for two essays: "Did They Die With Their Boots On?" and "German-Latin American Internment? What it Means For Us Today." Sponsored by the Friends of Joyner Library, the W. Keats Sparrow Awards recognize excellence in research and writing by students in East Carolina University's English 1200 composition classes. Palumbo has been named to the editorial board of the Journal of
Popular Culture, a publication of Bowling Green State University that
takes an "inter and multidisciplinary approach to the study of culture
in every area and through all forms -- the arts and sciences, the print
and electronic media."
