Mug ShotAngelo Restivo presented "The Ecstasies of F. W. Murnau" at the annual conference of the Society for Cinema Studies, May 23-26, 2002 in Denver, Colorado.  The paper was a contribution to the panel "Queer Before Gay: the Cinematic Strategies of Murnau, Eisenstein, and Pasolini."  Restivo observes, "Murnau's homosexuality has always seemed to be of central importance to his work--important enough to warrant at least some mention of it by most critics who attempt to deal with the aesthetic dimensions of his work.  And yet the precise nature of the connection between the director's homosexuality and his work remains enigmatic.  By way of comparison, one could consider the way in which any given film of, say, George Cukor or Vincente Minelli is quite easily 're-readable' in light of the director's homosexuality, the knowledge of which functions like a Lacanian quilting point...."

Gay Wilentz read her essay, "Cultural Healing through Writers," for the Global Cultural Formation Committee, Economics Department, American University, Wasington DC, May 2, 2002; and "Writing through the Voices of the Ancestors: African Diaspora Women Writers" at the African Literature Association, San Diego, California, April 2002.

Peter Makuck gave a poetry reading at the Glenn Eure's Ghost Fleet Art Gallery in Nags Head, NC on May 25, 2002.
