Awards & Appointments

HallStephanie Hall was elected President of the North Carolina Association for Developmental Education at their conference held in Burlington, NC, October 9-10.  NCADE has 140+ members who serve as developmental education instructors, administrators, and researchers in North Carolina's community colleges, public, and private four-year colleges.

In August 2003, Tom Shields was appointed Director of the North Carolina Studies Program. North Carolina Studies is a minor offered through the College of Arts & Sciences at East Carolina University.  The program features a comprehensive view of the "Old North State" by looking at North Carolina through an interdisciplinary program of study.  ECU's program is the only one offered in the University of North Carolina system.  The North Carolina Studies program is an excellent minor program choice for students majoring in anthropology, politics, law, history, education, business, social work, and other related fields.

The Faculty Senate Academic Awards Committee has solicited nominations for the ECU Award for Excellence in Research or Creative Activity.  From the Dept. of English, Gay Wilentz has been nominated for the Lifetime Achievement Award which recognizes accomplishments made across the entire span of the candidate's professional lifetime; Pat Bizzaro and Seodial Deena have been nominated for the Five Year Award, which focuses on accomplishments in the past five years.

mahboobIn September 2003, Lia Kamhi-Stein, from California State University, LA, and Ahmar Mahboob have been awarded the TESOL International Research Forum (TIRF) Priority Research Grant. The TIRF grant is one of the most prestigious in the field of TESOL. The title of the grant is: "The Relationship between Teachers' English Proficiency and Curriculum Delivery in EFL Settings and Settings where English is an Institutionalized Language."  The grant award of $25,000 will be used for research carried out in Argentina, Pakistan, and S. Korea.  Also, Mahboob has been elected representative for Eastern North Carolina on the Carolina TESOL (Teacher's of English to Speakers of Other Languages) Board.  This is a new position on the board, and Mahboob will be Eastern North Carolina's first representative.  More info about Carolina TESOL is available on the web at carolinatesol.org.  The upcoming Carolina TESOL Conference will be held November 13-15 in Greenville, SC.

Nicole Nolan has been awarded a College Research Award for Spring 2004 by the ECU School of Arts and Sciences.  Her research project, "The Devil's Sister: Language, Labor and Gender in Middle English lyrics," looks at ìhow anxieties about women's speech and attempts to control it parallel attempts to systematize and stabilize the English language during the fifteenth century (the point at which English reaches a degree of stability)."
